Toronto Alternative Artist Delyn Grey Unveils Her Single/Video "Set Me Free"

Delyn Grey is a Toronto-based artist looking to break some barriers via alt-rock waves. Delyn's voice is rooted in the contemporary, but has a unique depth and richness of timbre, and maturity of emotion that distinguishes her not only from her like-aged peers, but from older, established artists as well. Lyrically, Ms. Grey reaches far beyond the typical love-and-heartbreak themes, which are superficially indulged ad nauseam by the vast majority of current commercial artists. Stylistically, Delyn bravely combines current R&B and electronic vibes with edgier rock elements reminiscent of the early days of Grunge, resulting in an accessible yet fresh, exciting, and at times even slightly dangerous feel to her music. From early choir-girl days to full-time legal studies, a tech industry career, and alt-rocker nightlife, Grey’s dedication to music has never wavered. In fact, she’d argue it’s only grown stronger thanks to the full plate of learning opportunities and inspiration. Delyn is a true force to be reckoned with.

Delyn continues a hot streak of emotionally charged releases expressing deeply human themes on new single "Set Me Free", out now on all platforms. "Set Me Free", according to Delyn, is about 'relief and empowerment', delivered through a multi-dimensional alternative/indie rock sound, underlying pop melodies and raw, unflinching vocals.

Speaking about her new release, Delyn says, “This song is release, it’s relief and empowerment. It’s moving forward and getting it done. When I was first starting to pursue music, a lot of people told me I should make it my Plan B, a hobby, because I didn’t have anything unique to offer. I was 15. No one, let alone a 15 year old, should ever be told they shouldn’t work towards pursuing something that gives them purpose. Music was never a hobby for me, I just couldn’t have that relationship with it and I needed people to know that. I needed myself to know that I was rooting for me, that I had my back no matter what came my way, and that I would make it past the snide and/or uniformed comments about MY life choices. Despite having written this song several years ago, it holds a huge place in my heart and comforts me any time I listen to it.

Fun fact; I was on my way to the studio to record a demo of the song and had promised my producer at the time that I would have a bridge for the song. I didn’t have one. So I get on the subway, stressing out because I couldn’t come up with anything the week before. All of a sudden I hear this melody ringing in my head. I grab my phone, awkwardly hum and sing into it, scribble down some lyrics, and out comes the bridge you hear on the track. Crazy things happen when you sit back, listen, and just let them happen.

This is an anthem for anyone who’s ever been made to feel like their passion is pointless. Put the work in, people! Regardless of the goal, the experience alone will be worth it. Grab the reins and hold on tight.

My art wants purpose and I work hard to serve that. I work equally as hard to find purpose in my art.
