Rina Sawayama Drops New Video "Ordinary Superstar"

Future pop icon Rina Sawayama has released the official video for "Ordinary Superstar," directed by Can Evgin with creative direction from Nicola Formichetti.

Harkening back to a decadent and lavish period in Japanese nightlife, Rina Sawayama's "Ordinary Superstar" video is set in the opulent club scene in 1980's Tokyo. Given rise to by Japan's economic surge throughout the decade, an extravagant club scene created a new high culture across the country, with megaclubs like Juliana's setting the style agenda. "One of the main inspirations for this video is my mother and how she'd dress to go clubbing" says Sawayama. Styled and conceptualised by fashion designer and editor Nicola Formichetti, the video plays with retro and contemporary references to represent the huge diversity in style across the continent. "We didn't even have to explain any of this to the team," says Rina of the all-Japanese glam and styling team who created each look. "Everyone immediately just got it". The video was commissioned by i-D and directed by Can Evgin of BRUCE whose previous work includes campaigns Yves Saint Laurent and Giorgio Armani.

Released late last year on her debut mini-album RINA, "Ordinary Superstar" explores the modern fascination with influencers and vlogger culture. Dubbed an "R&B-fueled peek into the pop future" (Guardian), the 8-track release took inspiration from racing simulator soundtracks, retro-cyberpunk, and Anglo-Japanese culture clash.
