London Artist Eden Rain Releases Her Debut Single/Video "Wake Up, You're Stuck"
/Hailing from Leeds and now based in London, newcomer Eden Rain has revealed her debut single ‘Wake Up, You’re Stuck’ - a beautifully-intimate look at the “fight or flight” decisions that inform the pivotal moments of our lives. Arriving alongside a video crafted completely from scratch, the track announces the arrival of a wonderfully unique artist.
Influenced by the poetic lyricism of Kae Tempest, the relatable nature of modern popstars such as Beabadoobee and girl in red, and the evocative musical landscapes of Sufjan Stevens, Rain’s debut smartly and sensitively manages to draws these ideas together, creating a track that feels both warmly familiar and imaginatively far-reaching.
Piano-led, with crackling, analogue-style touches and the singer’s strong-yet-vulnerable vocal, ‘Wake Up, You’re Stuck’ acts as a showcase for Eden’s deft way with words; “Couldn’t lie through my teeth, so I took them all out / Got so much more room for my foot in my mouth,” she notes wryly during the track’s slow-building chorus.
“For me, this song is the feeling of being eaten alive from the inside out,” says Eden. “I wrote it after waking up from a nightmare when I had fallen asleep with Planet Earth on in the background. To me the song feels like a fight or flight situation: do I stay being eaten alive or attempt to save myself from all the things I’m running from?”
Having already teased her Instagram following with a series of witty, hand-drawn illustrations, now ‘Wake Up, You’re Stuck’ offers a real window into the multi-dimensional, deeply personable world that Eden Rain wants to create: an attitude that she’s dubbed “gutter vision”.
“My parents once took my family on holiday in a campervan across Scandinavia. We drove over this amazing mountain pass and they all got out of the car to take a look at the view. They were staring out, in awe of the mountain landscape saying, ‘This is so amazing’, and I was like, ‘Yeah – look at all the cigarette butts on the floor!’” she laughs. “That’s when my mum told me I had ‘gutter vision’. I was more interested in the people who went to the mountains to smoke. I look at the world from the gutter upwards.”
