Review: Charlotte Bash's "Princess Game"

If you miss Lady Gaga (circa 2009), then @cbashmusic debut "Princess Game" is your itching fix, without a doubt. Charlotte Bash relishes in bright art pop, and it works...

Charlotte Bash music

Lush and shiny flare in the collection of her music's bubbling 90s' Pop that in fact also contains an EDM firecracker of tracks. By borrowing live instrumentation, Princess Game's sincere blend of classical music appreciation shows.

Universally appealing and unique, all at once, the indie style of dance-pop music jams from Bash, a professional classical singing background, tracks like the waves in "Impossible Dream", the slow burning, operatic tone shows her best factor, artistically and with great talent, by incorporating more piano work, even though some tracks on the record, needs more balanced adjustment with its quality of production, and seems sometimes suffocating, with the natural live instrumentation.

More solid, band oriented tracks like the closing track, "Back Again" do stand out more then some of the techno side of the flow in the album’s flavor. The track "Down" featuring a cooling men's choir while Bash simultaneously and effortlessly rocks her immediate and powerful vocal range with a killer drum beat behind it:
"Money makes the world go 'round/ Money's gonna break us down/  Everybody wants to claim us down/ But we took it too far/ I think we're going down/  "down, down, down, I think we are going down

Even if the verses seem to repeat itself, the upfront and riding piano makes up for one of the best highlights in the album.

With a lively quest spot by Anye Elite, an alternative mix of songwriting, even in the likes of Madonna, with "Love In The Real World", which dominates the synth hitting cut.

Charlotte Bash was raised in Indiana and is now residing in Los Angeles. In college, she became a classically trained soprano singer. But when she digs in her personal music, Charlotte Bash stirs in a mix blend of Elle Goulding, especially in the album's opening track "Leave" with its undeniably catchy, Ace Of Base style and chord progression.  Only more modern and toned down with its "Phantom of the Opera' mask in the record's deep switch between dance-pop and operatic, piano driven theatricals. Displaying various bittersweet themed songs:
If you cut me I won't bleed/ I won't cry won't let you see/Gonna give you count to three/You better leave/ Take back your promises and leave/ All of those lies you said to me/I'm gonna give you count to three“.

Tracks like “Siren”, about signaling something lost, while warning from fear and wishful thinking. While a pulsing heartbeat in the likes of “Summertime Sadness” takes over the energetic track. But, at the same time, chilled hand plucked string accompaniment, truly brings the track back to a grounded stable layout.

If you miss Lady Gaga (circa 2009), then Charlotte bash's debut is your itching fix, without a doubt. Charlotte Bash relishes in bright art pop, and it works.

If you cut me I won't bleed/ I won't cry won't let you see/Gonna give you count to three/You better leave/ Take back your promises and leave/ All of those lies you said to me/I'm gonna give you count to three

"Money makes the world go 'round/ Money's gonna break us down/  Everybody wants to claim us down/ But we took it too far/ I think we're going down/  "down, down, down, I think we are going down

Grace Valerie

Grace Valerie is a chart topping Dance Pop sensation and acclaimed songwriter originally from Russia whose latest video "See How We Run" is an upbeat, lively and addictive visual that we featured last month. We connected with this talented artist and performer to find out how she got her start as a singer-songwriter, how she would describe her music to a stranger in three words, her goals for the remainder of 2017 and much more.

After reading our exclusive Q&A with Grace, be sure to follow her on social media to stay up to date on her new upcoming releases and all things "Grace Valerie".

How did you get your start as a singer-songwriter? And have you always focused on Dance/Pop as the genre of music you create?

I wanted to be a singer since a little girl. I was fascinated by performers and music instruments. As I grew older, I would take piano and vocal lessons and play around with different sound. But pop and dance music were always my fav!

If you had to describe your music to a stranger in three words, which ones would you select?

Groovy, sexy and fun

Tell us about a typical Grace Valerie live performance? And what do you enjoy most about being on stage in front of an audience?

Every live show is different due to many factors : venue, band or DJ, dancers or solo, the crowd, city, country etc.

I always give my all and try to gift poeple as much light and fun I possibly can! I love to interact with the crowd and get them to dance and enjoy themselves.

Which one song from you catalog would you say personifies you the most as an artist?

I think "See How We Run"

How did you connect with Brandon Hall Paddock to create your single and latest visual "See How We Run"?

He is a good friend of Klaupex who produced the track. He also recorded my vocals for "Magic" so I absolutely love working with him and Alan Notkin

If you were stuck on a deserted island and only had access to one album to listen to until your rescue, which album would you select?

Beyonce "I am ... Sasha Fierce".

What are your musical goals for the remainder of 2017? 1. How did you get your start as a singer-songwriter? And have you always focused on Dance/Pop as the genre of music you create?

My goal is to write and record more music. Working on a full EP. When I wrote my first song - I just started pouring my heart on the paper. And I kept writing and perfecting my thoughts and rhymes. And this is how I created "Magic" and "See How We Run"; I have always pictured myself in Pop / Dance world. However the sky is the limit.

Kendall Lake music

We connected with the extremely talented LA based Rock artist Kendall Lake to discuss her latest single "Hero", as well as to find out what she enjoys most about performing in front of a lively audience, and much more.

After reading our exclusive Q&A with Kendall, be sure to follow her on social media so that the next time you're in southern Cali you can see this dynamic artist sing "Hero" in person.

Tell us about your latest single "Hero"; who produced it and what are you most proud of with it?

I've really only worked with one producer. His name is Tek/Tekneek and he's tucking amazing!! Everyone I've released is produced by him. "Hero" is about asking and giving someone help and being and needing a savior. It's hard to trust someone and admit what you want whilst also figuring out what you need. They aren't always the same thing.

With the opportunities to perform at the SKITZO concert series, The Viper Room, and The Troubadour, what do you enjoy most about performing live?

Performing in a room face to face with people is a bonding experience. I'm looking to them for comfort for affirmation for support and to be the recipient of the love I have and want to give. It's a connection. It's like being naked in front of someone. At first you're insecure scared they are going to judge you or disapprove, make you feel inferior or want to leave. But when they stay, it's a feeling of acceptance and vulnerability that weirdly calms you down and encourages you to be yourself. Then you get excited because you FINALLY found someone who sees you for what and who you truly are.

That's what I enjoy most about performing.

Do you ever get stage fright before a show? If so, how do you deal with it?

HELL YEA!

"Knees weak, arms are heavy. There's vomit on my sweater already moms spaghetti" - Eminem That's the best way I can describe how I feel before a show.

Which do you enjoy more being on stage performing for a live audience or appearing in TV and films?

Performing live!!! Hands down! All I want to do is perform and sing. It's my therapy.

Kendall Lake

From your catalog of music thus far, which one song would you say personifies you the most as an artist?

I don't really know how to answer that because every song personifies' me. Every single song is a personification of who I am. I wanna give some deep, intellectual answer but I can't. Every song is a piece of my mind, body and soul.

Being a LA native, which local artists/actors have been the most influential to you as you came into yourself as a performer?

I'm not sure I can list "local" artists/entertainers who impact and inspire me but I can say everyone I'm around makes me want to be the best version of me. I go to shows and witness artists I've never heard of, for one reason or another, and I'm floored and wish I was like them. They all influence me in one way or another.

What are your goals for the remainder of 2017?

My number one goal is to be happy. That's the only reason we do the shit we do. We think it's going to make us happy. I'm happiest making music so I'm working hard to share my music with people. I need to travel and tour to do that best and that's my focus. Spreading my crazy little gospel.

Darla.press-min.jpg

Darla Beaux is an LA based singer-songwriter whose new single "Trippin On Tears" blends Pop and RnB over an infectious beat in all the right ways. We connected with Darla to discuss this new single, find out what she's most proud of with debut EP "Rebel Soul", and much more.

After reading this exclusive interview with Darla, be sure to follow her on all her social media streams, check out her website and stay tuned because we may be getting a visual for "Trippin On Tears" and an EP soon.

We love how your vocals flows seamlessly over the beat for your new single "Trippin On Tears". Tell us about your creative process for this track. Who produced it and what led you and Adam Stidham to write those lyrics?

Honestly the music just flows together after jamming for a bit, then my producer Travis Margis puts cool little things in it to make it sound nice and fancy. When Adam and I wrote the lyrics, I told him about an experience I had been going through, where a girl hated me and was stalking me. All the lyrics kinda fell together after that.

In looking at one of your older videos on YouTube (specifically "Rebel Soul"), we noticed that you went from a blond to a red head. What motivated you to make that drastic change to your look? Do you miss your long locks?

Honey, Oh honey! I have had every color of hair you could think of and blonde is probably my least favorite. I've had pink, purple, blue, aqua, green, silver, bleached blond, orange and then red. For the hair cut? Nope, no way! Those locks were heavy and kinda boring. I'm looking forward to even more crazy changes to my hair.

Speaking of "Rebel Soul", what are you most proud of with that debut EP?

The fact that I was so young and it still turned out pretty good. I've changed a lot since then, but it was a pretty big accomplishment.

How would you say that you have grown as an artist since you released "Rebel Soul"?

I literally grew. I was 14 when I wrote and recorded Rebel Soul, so I really hadn't experienced a lot of things. I was just starting out on my musical journey.

What do you enjoy most about performing live? Do you have a favorite track to sing?

Usually when I perform I get so into it that I don't know what I'm actually doing on stage. I get transported to somewhere else. I guess my favorite thing is getting transported to that special place.

My fav song to perform live would have to be In the Pines, it's a cover, but an original arrangement. It's so dark and gritty, I just love the whole feeling of that song.

If you could duet with any artist, living or past, who would you select?

Probably Brendon Urie, not only cause he's super talented and a musical genius, but because then I might get to see him do a back flip up close.

What's next for you after "Trippin On Tears"? Will this single be a part of an upcoming EP or full length album?

Trippin is part of my EP and will be out soon. There might even be a video coming out soon that looks super cool.

Earlier this year, DOPECAUSEWESAID featured a music video release from singer-songwriter David Mark Bulley titled, "Where Do We Go From Here". As expected, David has not been sleeping on us. June 9 will see the release of the singer's brand new EP Prologue, and 11 track offering where he tells his personal story though the art of music. We had the privilege of getting an exclusive listen to the project, and we promise you will not be disappointed.

David Mark Bulley is a London based singer-songwriter who is ready to take on the world with his powerful, emotive music. Not only does he have a beautiful musicality, but he has an excellent creative eye and strives for perfection. While David is a UK based artist, he has also accumulated a strong following in Poland, France and Japan. The release of the ‘Where Do We Go From Here’ music video received support from a number of music blogs from across the world including America, Australia and Germany. In fact, David received his very first Australian airplay this year which is soon to be followed by airplay in the UK.

Although we can go on about David's accomplishments all day, let's dive into the logistics of his new EP Prologue. The first track eases the listener into what proves to be a very diverse project with an ambient and almost mysterious instrumental titled Interlude: Prologue. As we listened on, the third song Kaleidoscope stood out due to the soft, sincere and longing overall tone of the track. While it isn't the only slow and sentimental tune of the bunch, the album does have quite a bit of up-beat and faster paced songs. Kaleidoscope displays the great deal of variety the singer is able to portray in his voice with his ability to jump from one style to the next.

The UK based musician wraps Prologue up perfectly with an inspirational pop-esque track titled Lions, leaving the listener satisfied and inspired. It was hard to choose which track we liked best, as they were all unique and well thought out in their own respective ways. Throughout the EP, David's voice is simultaneously powerful and smooth, and it was definitely a pleasure listening to these 11 tracks. It is clear to see David put in time and effort towards his vision, and that is something we can definitely respect. We have no doubt this artist will continue to pump out the brilliant work and can't wait to see where his music will take him in the future.

Review: "Undertow" EP by Kylie Odetta

The young @kylieodetta is pushing her classy, ageless tunes effortlessly...

Kylie Odetta

Some artist try to invent new borders. To reinvent the wheel and make a public statement addressing, "this sound is the new thing!"

Taylor Swift is the most recent global status phenom in recent years. But will her sound still be deemed classic and will it ever be deemed dated in the not so distant future?

Well, mostly everything becomes uncool sooner or later. The sixties were covered in hippie aroma, the seventies was a big monopolized disco bender, the eighties was overly flamboyant and ridiculously majestic, and the nineties were anti-pop until around '96, when it rebelled on the initial rebellion and ended up churning out sweet bubblegum jams from groups like Aqua and Spice Girls. In those late 90s', a sleeper hit rose up by the London based funk rock group Jamiroquai's "Virtual Insanity" that embellished in late 70s' funkadelic, creating a new and more importantly, young fan base. In the case of Kylie Odetta, her jazz/soul influenced songbird nobility might of been difficult to breakthrough with the high demand club bangers and over-tuned pop anthems that usually take over the Top 40 charts. But now in 2017, the independent stream of value is only getting more accessible. Discovering an audience that's been accidentally hiding all this time.

Opening track,"Sunny Day" does a good job describing the vibe with the songs title. Reminiscent of Sheryl Crow's "I Want To Soak Up The Sun" with its pretty and positive charm. Meanwhile. a rich jazz smoothie with happy organs accompany the 19 year old. Odetta is not simple taking about 'Sunshine, lollipops and rainbows" but confessing her lust for live and to always try to seize the day. The following track, ""You Don't Love Me"  is a sad love song about blind fools and the relationship lenses we often times accept. Rivaling a Tori Kelly radio hit, but with more adult lyrical undertones. The delicious guitar licks that layer the soundscapes, creates a fine mood as Odetta sings her melancholy soliloquy: "you're not saying what you mean. what do you mean? what do you mean? you don't love me. you don't love me anymore." A pure display of emotional power delivered with seamless delicacy.

Even the third titular track, Undertow, gives an equal amount of emotional strength that only adds to the highlight. The easy and slick neo-funk instrumentation against metaphoric ripping currents: "The undertow is all i know and it's taking me down. The undertow is all i know but i'm not afraid to drown"

These are just some examples of a perfect antidote of time and nostalgia. The young Kylie Odetta is pushing her classy, ageless tunes effortlessly (seeing that shes been a practicing professional single since the age of 12 with early Youtube videos of Odetta even performing the national anthem at a baseball stadium at the age of 13.) Her undertow is her care for her craft in music. An unknown tunnel of hardship and success. Odetta has created her own personal time to breakthrough and what a perfect time to do so. If Amy Winehouse was an old soul in disguise, then Kylie Odetta is her younger sister.

Only with a indie pop twist as a hint of Norah Jones coolness embraces her preferable piano driven songwriting.

Melbourne based singer-songwriter and producer ONIQ is stunning the music world with the premier of his aesthetically beautiful new music video, "Not A Toy".

Frazer McBride, otherwise known as ONIQ, is a multi-platform creator, songwriter and pop/experimental artist who focuses primarily on music and film. His music is high energy and accompanied by psychedelic visual representations, most of which he creates himself. As his music continues to take shape and progress, we are realizing that there are not many things this man can’t do.

Upon speaking to the British native in the heart of St. Kilda Beach, I discovered the premise of the song was based off the singer’s unwillingness to be held down or be treated like a toy; easily influenced and disposable. ONIQ chose to portray his message in an abstract and creative way, using symbolism and dance to support a much greater message; we are all humans, and deserve to be treated with respect.

The video opens up with ONIQ tied to a chair and a masked man walking menacingly behind him, followed by an intense instrumental and ONIQ’s articulate rapping style. Next we see just how diverse the singer can be when the video incorporates a three person dance number, ONIQ killing the routine in the middle flanked by two leather clad women. The choreography becomes even more demanding with an instrumental break towards the end of the song, using hand techniques and sharp movements that are perfectly in time.

The ending leaves the viewer/listener pondering what exactly has happened, creating grounds for open discussion and interpretation. Don’t worry, we won’t spoil it. You are just going to have to watch.

Between the singer’s dancing, production, powerful vocals and gift of visual beauty, we definitely recommend keeping an eye out for him. (The alluring white-blonde hair and accent aren’t too bad either.)

Two thumbs up!

Exclusive Interview With UK Based Pop Singer-Songwriter David Mark Bulley

We connected with @davidmarkbulley to discuss his upcoming EP "Prologue", how he deals with writer's block...

David Mark Bulley

David Mark Bulley is a UK based Pop singer-songwriter whose visual for his song "Where Do We Go From Here" is one of our favorites of the year thus far. We connected with this very talented artist to discuss his upcoming EP "Prologue", how he deals with writer's block, what he enjoys most about performing live and much more.

After reading this exclusive Q&A, be sure to follow David on his social media streams and be sure to pre-order his EP "Prologue" on May 19th (due out for official release on June 9th).

When did you discover that you had the gift to sing and who are some of your earliest influences?

When it comes to singing I always think there is room for improvement. I always want to develop my vocal ability. I’m my worst critic and sometimes I’ll be like “David that performance sucked!” I think it’s a good way to think of it so that you can progress. I’m completely in awe of artists such as Adele, Celine Dion, Stevie Wonder. Michael Jackson, the classics.

As a songwriter, how do you deal with writer’s block?

Honestly… I leave it. I spent 5 years writing a song that won’t actually feature on the album but I’m releasing it this Summer. You have to take your time. Why rush? Music is a beautiful thing and if it doesn’t come from the heart how can you expect it touch the hearts of others?

As a fan of the Purge movies myself, I commend you on a very dope video for “Where Do We Go From Here”; who directed the visual and how long did it take to shoot?

Thank you so much! My best friend Robert Oliver West directed the video and I co-directed which was really fun. We planned for months prior to filming and love getting creative when it comes to music videos. It took us a day to film and it was so cold!

What do you enjoy most about performing live? Do you have a favourite song to perform?

Honestly I just love performing. Meeting those people who have supported me whether it be 5 years or 5 days. It’s such an inspiring and positive environment to be in. I wouldn’t say I have a favourite song to perform but I do enjoy mixing up my songs to give it a different feel every time I perform.

What can we expect from your upcoming debut EP?

It’s titled "Prologue". I’m so excited. It’s straight from the heart. It explores all the different emotions that a person can go through!

Beta Days' Bill Bierce Discusses Their Single "This Art Ain't Mine" And Upcoming Album "S.T.T."

We connected with @betadays_stt Bill Bierce to discuss the band's upcoming album "S.T.T." (due out on 6.23.17), how their single "This Art Ain't Mine"...

Beta Days

Beta Days evolved from multi-instrumentalist, Bill Bierce’s, late night writing sessions that would start around 3AM.  Fighting isolation, lack of sleep, and depression, Bierce battled through ups and downs to write and record enough material for a full length LP.

We connected with Bill Bierce to discuss the band's upcoming album "S.T.T." (due out on June 23rd), how their single "This Art Ain't Mine" reflects the overall direction of the album, and much more.

After reading this exclusive Q&A, be sure to follow Beta Days on social media and head on over to their website for more information about the band and "S.T.T.".

If the band's music was to be described in three words, which words would you select?

It’s not rap.

Tell us about how therapeutic this album, and music in general, has been for you as you'd dealt with the loss of your mother and sickness of your father.

Its definitely been helpful. Obsessive minds will always obsess, but you can find healthier things to channel it into. Music gives me a sort of an alternate reality to jump into, which is nice. Not that this one is so bad…

Is "This Art Ain't Mine" a reflection of the overall direction of the music we can expect on "S.T.T."? And can you tell us what the acronym stands for?

I think it is actually a good overall representation, which is probably why I put it first. It’s probably the one that’s the most like all the others, if that makes any sense. The lyrics are kind of about needing to do your own thing, which I certainly how I felt prior to making the album. The acronym stands for “Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday”, which were the days of the week we would have recording sessions.

What are your goals musically after the album drops next month? Can we expect some more visuals and tour dates across the country?

We’re already working on the next bunch of songs. I can’t wait to make some new music. Some of the songs on the album were written like 5 years ago and I really feel like our best work is ahead of us. Touring has certainly been on my mind… I gotta ask the boys.

If Beta Days were to play Coachella next year, what would be the first song you would play? Why?

Well I’m assuming we’d be on the smallest, most obscure stage.. Like if they have one for people waiting in line in the parking lot to get into the festival. Actually, that’s probably a gig you need some industry clout to get.. we’re more of a play in a restaurant near Coachella type of act. In which case we’d probably just play the full album in order.

Beta Days

Tell us about the name Beta Days. Where did it originate and what does it mean specifically?

The name is kind of about youth. Like, if you’re “in beta” as a person, you’re still open minded/messing around/filled with wonderment/not an old curmudgeon yet. Its also just two words that sound OK put together. I dunno, I hate band names.

Smith & Thell is a Swedish folk-pop duo based in Stockholm whose debut album "Soulprints" is due for release on May 12th. We connected with the very talented artists and songwriters to discuss their upcoming album, find out more about their very interesting "Yes Man Code", as well as how they determine which songs to keep for themselves and to sell, and much more.

After reading our exclusive Q&A with Smith & Thell, follow them on their social media streams and pre-order "Soulprints" on iTunes.

When you guys moved to Stockholm, you agreed to live by a "Yes Man Code" for a whole year; looking back, do you remember one time when you regret having to implement that code?

Funny question.. Well.. We ended up at some awkward parties consisting of some super-difficult people, plus we got quite a few hangovers we could have lived without. The ’stay for another beer’ strategy was common during this phase.  We really recommend everyone take on a ’yes man’ period in life.

If you had to describe your music in three words to a stranger, which ones would you select?

Honest, Earthy, Hopeful.. maybe? :)

As songwriters for other artists as well, how do you decide which songs to keep for yourselves and which ones to sell?

We just know. We get attached to a song differently when it’s written for someone else versus for ourselves.

I really like the visual for your new video "ROW"; how did you guys decide on the premise of the video and who directed it?

Thank you! The director is August Segerholm and the animations are made by an animation firm from our home town Helsingborg called Family & Friends. We felt like the landscape of the island of Gotland, Sweden (where we filmed it) was perfect setting for the song and video.

Tell us about what we can expect from your upcoming debut album "Soulprints", which is due for release on May 12th. Also, how will it be different that your EP "Statue" in terms of the overall sound?

You can expect a real emotional roller coaster with the album as most of the songs are about dealing with grief, in one way or another. Emotionally we touch on so many things, anger, apathy, sadness, thankfulness, forgiveness and the feeling of loss being the core emotion to them all.  Also our listeners will get to know a little different side of us on a few songs as we’ve been experimenting a bit.

Describe your song development process. From the first lyric written to the recording studio, how long does it typically take for a Smith & Thell track to be completed and when do you know it is finished?

We never sit down in the studio with each other and be like ’hey we have to write a new Smith & Thell song today'. That process happens when we write with/for others, but for the band project, we consider it an honest and not forced process. We feel like writing when it comes to us.  Almost all song ideas on the album started outside of a studio. We've learned to trust our gut-feeling.  Usually we start a song and leave it for a few months, taking our time to  finish lyrics and fine-tuning melody a little here and there. Then we wait for the right day to record. Basically the whole process is based on the "when you know you know" mentality.

Barring a ban of Swedish citizens by President Trump, can we expect to see you guys on stage performing in the United States this year?

Yes, very soon, but maybe we should hurry before no one else is welcome. ;) In the meantime we want to dedicate our song ’Row’ to Melania Trump as she might need some encouragement in order to be able to put up with him.

ZØYA is a very talented Columbus based Pop singer-songwriter whose newly released 5-song EP "Veracious Heart" was just reviewed by our contributor Peneliope Richards; go to our Features page to check it out. We connected with ZØYA to discuss her new EP, the positive message of her music, her musical influences, and her goals for the remainder of 2017.

After reading our exclusive Q&A with ZØYA, be sure to stream/download "Veracious Heart" and follow her on her social media streams.

You have a very beautiful voice; when did you discover that you could sing and when did you write your first song?

Thank you! I discovered that I can sort of sing when I was 11 years old. One day, my parents asked me to sing a song at one of our local church services. I had to sing an acapella in front of 500+ people for the first time. As a result, the audience enjoyed it, and I received a lot of positive feedback from professional musicians as well as music coaches and they encouraged me to keep up at singing. I wrote my first ballad when I was 13 years old. I was just playing around, improvising on my old-school piano at home and then an interesting melody came up to me and eventually I wrote the lyrics to it. I’m classically trained on piano, so I remember I had to write down the notes of my very first melody to the music sheet so that way I could remember how to play it again.

Your music has a very positive and hopeful message. As opposed to writing songs about drugs, sex and partying as many Pop artists do, why did you decide to create empowering and faith-filled music?

Because I want to talk and sing about raw, and real things in my songs. I want to share my story with everyone. I've had my heart broken many times; I was emotionally abused, mentally bullied and socially rejected in the past. I struggled with self-denial, severe anxiety and depression. Even though I'm still struggling with it sometimes, there's always one thing that gives me a purpose, hope and strength in life - my faith and personal relationship with God. There's something a lot more deeper and meaningful about music in general. I believe that through music we can heal and empower everyone. Nowadays, I feel that most of the mainstream pop music is relatively shallow in terms of the lyrical context; it's lacking an authentic message and real meaning. It is franchised and it just exists for the most of the time. Therefore, I want my listeners to know that my music is all about the message of hope and love. If they're struggling at the moment, I'd like to remind them that they are not alone and that they are loved.

Who are some of your musical influences? How do you stand out from them and your contemporaries in Pop music?

Sia, Adele, Amy Winehouse, Sara Bareilles, Nina Simone and Ella Fitzgerald. I sing and play what I feel. I am open minded to different music styles and I'd like my music to be very eclectic in terms of genre. I love mixing soul, jazz, folk, rock and alternative pop together very often and adding some elements of oldies. I can assure you that my next release will be different in terms of sound style as opposed to this EP.

What are you most proud of with your new "Veracious Heart" EP? Do you have a favorite song on it?

The fact that it is my debut original EP that I’ve released independently, wrote all songs and co-produced them for the first time. I’ve also had the opportunity to record it with an amazing music team in a very warm and welcoming setting at the Red Oak Studios which is owned by the Grammy nominated and multi-platinum mix engineer Mark Needham, who produced and mixed for Imagine Dragons, the Killers, Shakira and more.

I Still Believe is probably one of my favorites on the record because it excites me the most out of all songs. It is considered as the lead single in the EP that is the theme to my new self-empowerment online campaign #IStillBelieve that allows everyone to participate by sharing stories of struggles or victories and in return to receive encouragement, love and strength. Also, I really enjoyed recording the vocals as well as work on production of I Still Believe.

What are your goals for the remainder of 2017 musically?

Play as many shows as possible, release my first music video for I Still Believe, and kick off the Veracious Heart tour sometime in May. Veracious Heart Tour schedule is to be determined soon, so stay tuned.

Review: ZØYA's Veracious Heart EP

Although ZØYA’s 5-track EP "Veracious Heart" was made with good intentions and has a positive message it doesn’t quite hit the target. Throughout "Veracious Heart" the Columbus, Ohio-based singer sings about certain aspects of her life dismantling and how she fought her way back to happiness.

She starts things with “I Still Believe” where she’s backed by percussion and piano-driven production. “I Still Believe” finds ZØYA battling her demons and trying to move on, it’s a process after all. She finds comfort in knowing that she is not alone and will soon feel free. ZØYA’s vocals on this track are strong but the production steals the show at times. “I Still Believe” is followed by “Falling Apart,” which precedes “I Still Believe” story wise. “Falling Apart” is about the ZØYA who didn’t fully believe because everything was crumbling around her; here she asks to be kept complete while she going through this. She may be asking a person or personifying her veracious heart. Like “I Still Believe” the production is strong; however, her vocals are not over over powered this time with its ballad-like presence. “Chaos In My Head” is the third track that let listeners in on what led ZØYA to “Falling Apart”; the overthinking, the worrying, the chasing. “When Fire Melts” follows and continues the theme of ZØYA’s powerful, yet at times dramatic, vocal approach (Think Celine Dion or Madonna). Her last track is a Colin Youngwall remix of “Falling Apart,” which may prompt you to get up and move.

Ultimately, "Veracious Heart" is a good listen, listen to it below.

Interview: DCWS Connects With Alternative Pop Singer-Songwriter Krista Marina

@kristamarinamusic is an alternative pop singer/songwriter whose music blends jazz, blues, and sometimes folk...

Krista Marina is an alternative pop singer/songwriter whose music blends jazz, blues, and sometimes folk, influences. We connected with Krista, who is also a Worldsarts Featured Artist, to find out more about how she got her start singing and songwriting, what she's most proud with her debut EP "Bittersweet", what her goals are for the rest of the year, and much more.

After reading our exclusive Q&A with Krista, be sure to follow her on social media, check out her website and stream/download "Bittersweet"!

Tell us about how you got your start singing and songwriting. Do you remember the first song you wrote?

As a young kid, I always loved to sing. I also loved to pretend I could play instruments, until I started formally taking piano lessons when I was 8. It was at that point that I discovered songwriting. I would always avoid practicing the piano piece my teacher would give me to learn. Instead, I would either add my own style to the piece or make up my own. I still love doing that today - making my own version of other songs. It's always exciting playing a cover live and seeing people react to my spin on a song they recognize.

I very distinctly remember the first song I wrote. I never named it, but I still have the lyrics in my notebook and still know how to play it. It's seriously a terrible song.

What did you learn about yourself as an artist when you were a part of the band for five years?

I learned a ton about myself as an artist while I was in a band for five years. It was during that span of time when I first started searching for and developing who I wanted to be as an artist. I absolutely loved being in a band and working with other musicians who understood my creative stream. I also learned a lot about arranging music for live shows as well as playing live. The band was a trio and, at times, a duo so we all had an immense role in arranging the vocals and instruments to fill up the sound. Throughout the entire experience, I was also doing my own writing, finding inspiration from shows and the other experiences that came along with being in the band.

What do you enjoy most about performing live?

Without a doubt, what I enjoy most about playing live is sharing moments with people. In every show, there are always moments in which I, personally, am so immersed and present in what I'm doing and the words I'm singing. The best feeling is opening my eyes to see that other people are in that same headspace with me. Looking out in the audience, you can see it in someone's eyes when they are fully listening and connecting. Everyone has things going on and I know a lot of people, like me, who constantly have their mind running with thoughts. But those moments during shows put everything on pause - like nothing else matters. Even if I'm singing about pain, the audience and I are sharing that emotion. And that makes those moments euphoric. That's why I love doing this. That's why I dedicate so much time and energy to this passion - for those moments of pure connection and absorption.

What are you most proud of with your debut EP "Bittersweet"? Do you have a favorite song on the EP? Where can our readers stream/download it?

The aspect of my EP "Bittersweet" that I am most proud of is how much of myself is in it - from writing every song, to producing each track. I produced, wrote out, and recorded all the instrument parts in each track before even going in to the studio to formally record them. There were definitely changes made along the way, but the foundation remained essentially the same.

I can't choose one song from the EP as my ultimate favorite because each song is so special to me. Each track is like a baby I raised, for lack of a better way to explain it. I love them all equally, in different ways! But there is one track that had a unique story: "Babe" was recorded completely live. The version on the EP is one, through take with just myself and guitarist Jimmy Hua jamming out. I wrote the song on an acoustic guitar so hearing it on an electric with a bluesy amp brought it to life. But we wanted to take it a step further and make sure the emotion in the song pierced through the recording. Putting the live studio version on the EP seemed like the best way to achieve that goal.

The EP can be found on Spotify, iTunes, Apple Music, Youtube, and Soundcloud

What are your goals musically for this year? Can we expect a new single or video soon?

My main focus, as far as music, for this year is to play as many shows as possible, continue evolving my live set, and to collaborate with as many artists as possible. I often write for other artists and I hope to continue doing that, too. I am also working on a new single. There is no formal release date yet, but keep an eye out! The best way to stay up to date with upcoming music or shows is on my Facebook or Instagram.

I'm excited to see what this year will bring. I've learned a lot since releasing the EP last summer and I can't wait to keep sharing stories and making connections with new people.

Multi-Talented UK Artist J.J Leone Connects With DCWS To Discuss His Recently Released Album "The Rebuild" And More

J.J Leone is a UK based singer-songwriter, multi instrumentalist and producer whose new single "Loving Someone"...

J.J Leone is a UK based singer-songwriter, multi instrumentalist and producer whose new single "Loving Someone" off his recently released album "The Rebuild", is one of our favorite tracks at the moment. We connected with J.J to find out how the "Loving Someone" single came about, whether there is a significance behind his album's title and much more.

After reading our exclusive Q&A with this multi-talented artist, be sure to show your support by streaming/downloading on iTunes "The Rebuild" below, sharing the visual for "Loving Someone" and following J.J on Twitter and Instagram.

If you had to choose between being an artist or producer for the rest of your musical career, which would you choose? Why?

An artist 100%. I really think there's something special about having a message and it actually being you singing and putting it out there from a personal perspective and letting other people hear that. I like producing, I was a producer before I found out I could really sing, but for me I think people will always listen to a singer-songwriter with a story.

We're big fans of your latest single "Loving Someone"; tell us about how that track came together. Did you produce it yourself?

Thank you! I sat down and wrote that track in the space of an hour! It actually happened right after a girl called me 'heartless' and that I was too closed off and hard to break down, so I was like how many other people really think that about me? Maybe I don't tell those closest to me enough how I feel about them, so I tried to communicate it in the way that is easiest for me; through music. But it's also about me adressing the other side of that like yeah maybe I do find it difficult to open up to people, and this is why. I write all of my own songs, completely by myself. The production is always done by me in my bedroom but I work with a couple of other guys on the production side of things too, so they can polish it and make little changes that only a fresh pair of ears can pick up.

Congratulations on the release of your new album "The Rebuild". Is there a special significance behind the album title?

I knew I was going to call my album 'The Rebuild' before any of the songs for it were written and before it took on the vibe that it did anyway. It comes from my own experience, I was at a crossroads in my life where I had given up part of my dream for something that I also really wanted, and it came to a point where I thought, I can carry on down this road, or rebuild my career, my relationships, and start everything again from scratch. 'Lost' from the album is probably the most honest song on the record that describes how I felt in that very moment where I had just come out the other side and began to realise how much my life was going to change.

Tell us about the development of the album. How long did it take to write and record the album's songs?

Luckily because I can do everything myself apart from mastering, the development of the album was a really smooth process, I don't have to wait for other producers, ghost writers or a label to give me the go ahead on a release either - I'm a really quick worker! As soon as I get a cool sounding melody, guitar riff, meaningful lyrics I really can't let it go and will work at it solidly until I can build a whole song around it. The songs for the album were all finished and ready within the space of four months. Trust me, it felt a lot longer! For every decent song I've written, there's at least 40 bad ones that will never see the light of day!

Will we be able to see you perform live in the U.S. in support of the new album this year?

Man, I really hope so! The States is a place I'd really love to go and play music, they always seem to receive my material really well and I've got some lovely messages of support like 'Your song really meant something to me'. Unfortunately I can't always go to all the places I would like to because being an independent artist with no funding, no label, agent or manager it's difficult to raise the funds to do an international tour, but luckily the exposure 'The Rebuild' has been getting, thanks to guys like you, has enabled me to be heard by more and more people in different positions within the industry. I can't say too much right now, but I hope to be in the US very soon!

Sasha Tandon Discusses Her Latest Single "Gotta Go" And The Perks Of Being One Of Her "Tigers"

Sasha Tandon is an RnB/Pop singer-songwriter based in London whose latest single "Gotta Go" is in heavy rotation around our Dopecausewesaid office. Born and raised in Ireland, Sasha first became hooked on performing after attending a Destiny's Child concert in Belfast at the age of 8 years old. Since then, by utilizing her presence on YouTube and social media and working with Jo Perry (Stooshe/X Factors’ Only The Young), Georgie Dennis (Cheryl Cole) and production heavyweights DaBeatFreakz (Usher/Jason Derulo), Sasha has taken the UK music scene by storm and plans to release a new EP later this year.

After reading our exclusive interview with Sasha, be sure to follow her on social media and become one of her "Tigers" at www.sashatandon.com/tigers. Also stream/download "Gotta Go" on iTunes, Google Play Music, Spotify or Amazon

If you were on a deserted island and only had access to one album, which one would you select and why?

If I could only ever listen to one album again it would be Destiny's Child album - The Writings On The Wall. It has always been my favourite album as it was the first album I purchased where I never had to skip one track... I would listen to each song the whole way through! It is definitely one of my favourite albums.

We're really big fans of your latest single "Gotta Go". Tell us a little bit about the song; who produced it and did you handle the songwriting duties yourself?

Thank you! It is one of my favourite songs to perform because I can really lose myself in it. The track was produced by the talented duo DaBeatFreakz who I have worked and written with before.

Was moving from Belfast to London a big adjustment for you? How are the two cities different in terms of their respective music scenes?

It was a massive adjustment! I am from a small town called Omagh which is just over an hours drive from Belfast, but I grew up always loving city life so I knew what to expect when moving to London. I used to travel over to London a lot when I was younger so I knew it was definitely somewhere I wanted to live, but actually making the big jump and moving over was quite scary to begin with. All my family were back home in Ireland so I came here with nothing knowing no one... I just had to grind on my own. I was so homesick at the start lol but I am very settled here now London is like my second home now.

Belfast is big on their music & have a very strong live music scene which is why I have done a lot of performances, but growing up in Northern Ireland we mainly listened to what was in the charts or people were playing their rock or country music as opposed to pop, so we never really got to discover much new music over there and I struggled to find producers to work with who were comfortable with making commercial pop music. The scene is a little different over there now due to social networking which has allowed different types of music to be discovered.

Following up on the last question, has being in London sparked your songwriting creativity at all?

Absolutely. I have met so many new people and been inspired by so many different stories and experiences. I have learnt a lot and been through so much since moving here so all of the life experiences have allowed me to grow as a song writer and an artist.

What's next after "Gotta Go"? Will we be getting another single and/or an EP soon?

Yes! I am currently planning on releasing my EP at the start of the summer... you guys need to look out for it I can't wait to drop it, its going to be hot ! This is the first complete project I will be putting out, so it is a glimpse into me as a person as well as an artist. I can't wait to get it out there!

How does someone reading this interview become a member of your "Tiger Team"?

Anyone reading this and wanting to become a member of my Tigers I am sending you so many love heart emojis right now! lol It is simple, you have to be loyal, fierce & want to spread the love! Go onto my website www.sashatandon.com and under the "Tigers" section click sign up and I will send you a free download as a welcome to the Tiger Team! I love all my Tigers, they inspire me everyday... we are like one bad ass family.

Review: American Dreamer's "Restless Nights"

Formed in Austin, Texas, this earthly ensemble of alternative pop and orchestrated folk depicts budding life experiences seen and expressed through thriving musicianship. This universally appealing band consists of: Audrey Lee (Violin), Courtney Castaneda (Cello), Dana Wygsmans (Back-up Vocals, Bass) and Sasha Klare-Ayvazian, the band's vocalist, guitarist, composer, and founder. Besides being the main fuel in American Dreamers, Ayvazian is also a teacher with a Masters degree in music and all that educational dedication to the study of sound influences his engaging singing and songwriting.

The record is filled with rich and charming tracks like the strumming acoustic trances coupling with emotional strings in the warm opener "Open Your Eyes" that speeds up the pace into a lightly lifted atmosphere, the slow ballroom waltz in the melancholy tale of loneliness in "When Your Away", the rock rooting blues inspired "Start-Stopping", and the instrumental quick but strong beauty in, "Lullaby". This eleven track golden gem is also accompanied with the colorful and artistic music video for the single, "All The Time". Restless Nights is the band's debut full-length album. A mature and professionally sweet record.
