Award-winning psychedelic rock/dream pop artist Aura Blaze continues his kaleidoscopic musical and philosophical evolution on the illuminating new 3-song EP "Open-Mindedness". Aura Blaze is the brainchild of New Jersey-based musician Rhode Rachel, who writes, records and produces everything. This EP, out now, contains two new originals as well as is a cover of The Charlatans (“The Only One I Know”).

Speaking about "Open-Mindedness", Aura Blaze says:

“Featuring 3 tracks packed with blazing energy, neon color, and a swirling galaxy of texture and innovative sound design, I can say with confidence that the Open-Mindedness EP is one for the record books.

Let the cover art speak for itself as a glimpse into the atmosphere of this release, with the sanctity of transcendental introspection blossoming radiantly through what Aldous Huxley would refer to as the “mind’s antipodes,” or the regions of the mind that one may reach through intense meditation or psychedelic exploration. It is an honor to offer Open-Mindedness as an aural adjuvant towards a deeper discovery of self, acting as a cosmic catalyst for elevated consciousness.

Originally intended as an early summer release, the recording process has been met with no shortage of setbacks, including an external hard drive that decided to crash at a significantly inopportune time during production. Thankfully, I was able to revive the recording sessions and I am happy to finally bring this EP to life amidst the adversity that challenged its creation.

Between the aforementioned crisis, changing careers, and buying my first home, it has certainly been a busy and turbulent year but eternal doth the ardent spirit rise, breaching heights unimagined, in the direction of divinity made manifest.

Suffice it to say, the culmination of the conquering of these respective trials and tribulations have refined the essence of the Open-Mindedness EP, shaping it into the strongest Aura Blaze release to date with respect to both production value and unbridled aesthetic. I am overjoyed at the prospect of finally being able to share these tracks with you. I thank all of you for your continued support as well as your patience in the interim. Rest assured the wait shall be worth it.”

Fans of trailblazing psychedelic pop rock artists like Tame Impala, Ariel Pink, GUM, The Beach Boys, MGMT or Pond should enjoy this release. Listen to the EP now, stream it on your preferred music service and connect with Aura Blaze on his website and social media.

Brooklyn Indie-Rock Trio Noble Kids Announce Sophomore Album, "Messy Pretty"

Brooklyn indie-rock trio @Noblekidsmusic are pleased to announce their forthcoming sophomore studio album titled “Messy Pretty”, out February 22nd

Noble Kids music.jpg

Brooklyn indie-rock trio Noble Kids, are pleased to announce their forthcoming sophomore studio album titled Messy Pretty (pre-order below). Engineered by Greg Giorgio (The National, Sharon Van Etten, Tokyo Police Club) at Tarquin Studios and at a home studio in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, Messy Pretty is a bold collection of songs that speak loudly and clearly about queerness and identity through personal experience and interpretation. It represents the messy but honest process in which they created the record, and the dynamic among the bandmates. With sparks of shiny pop buried beneath gritty indie-rock, their sound is driven by an interplay of clever guitar work with unafraid and upfront vocals, dirtied by demo takes and reprocessed sounds.

Messy Pretty is the realization that despite growing and settling into your queerness or your identity in general, the real obstacle lies in how others, sometimes your closest friends, (mis)classify your experience. If anything, the album is a frank admission or assertion that regardless of your identity, your experiences are allowed to be normal despite how disastrous they may seem. Messy Pretty is both the mistake and the lesson.

The album’s lead single, “Rain Hat,” embodies the essence of the album as a whole – it’s the messiest, most imperfect song presented here, recorded almost entirely in one night, on a whim. It’s human, full of single takes and room noises. With a modern but nostalgic pop sound, ‘Rain Hat’ feels like driving down the road with friends, wind in your hair, without a care in the world. Stream “Rain Hat” now below.

Brooklyn’s Noble Kids are Bryce Barsten, Michael Steiner & Kevin Chang. After recording their first album, the band set out to make something deliberately different and less constrained by their expectations of what a record should sound like. They left in original demo takes recorded in their underwear, scratch tracks, a zither recorded through an Apple earbud microphone, and background noises that reflected the spaces where the record was made. They threw more at the wall, experimented, and layered ideas to create concepts, and then subtracted from the songs, ending with a body of work that felt simple.

From the Beach Boys-inspired, good-time feel of “West of Here” and the heavy nostalgia found throughout “Rain Hat” to the clever guitar lick and punchy vocals presented on “Jaws,” the result is a daring and straightforward record, and very intentionally so. The lyrics are stories and ideas, spoken simply so that people can relate to them and use them as perspective, reassurance, or even guidance. Additionally, the album isn’t shy about talking about love either but too often it feels like when our generation tries to write about love, it comes off either vindictive or love sick. Messy Pretty tries to go beyond that by attempting to convey the nuanced highs and lows of trying to find yourself, your partner, and/or your voice.

Messy Pretty is a very human record,” says Barsten. “There is a sheen to it, but it's messy at its core and direct in a way that made us all a little uncomfortable while making it. That was a new feeling, and it became an important feeling to embrace. It pushed us.”

Bali Baby, the 20-year-old Atlanta rapper, shares the first proper taste of her forthcoming debut album, Baylor Swift, today with the first single "Backseat." Baylor Swift finds the Soundcloud starlet reincarnated as a pop punk princess, as she morphs her pop lucid dream into a distorted hypercolor reality atop production from rising New York producer Chicken. The album navigates Bali's escape from an abusive relationship through the lens of "POPROCK" which, in her own words, comprises "a mixture of rap, rock and pop!" With a kiss and a strum from her metaphoric guitar, Bali Baby is poised to fulfill her self-proclaimed title as the next teen pop sensation.

Check out the "Backseat" video and see below for full details on Baylor Swift.

More about Bali Baby:

Atlanta's Bali Baby first emerged in 2016 when her "Dip Dip Freestyle" went viral. Since then, Bali has amassed a loyal online following while also reinventing herself with every project - from the r&b tinged Bubbles Bali to her rap moment on Brazy Bali to featuring on Trippie Redd's melodic ballad "Woah Woah Woah." Through her transformations, Bali Baby constantly reveals a prowess at delivering hooks for days - on last year's standout single "IGGADY," Bali proclaims, "I cut that bitch head off and walk away giggling."

For her forthcoming debut full length, Baylor Swift, Bali Baby now shifts her focus from rap to pop -spinning tracks twisted around hybrid autotune to showcase her warped lyricisms through a sheen of venomous pop. Bali has carved out her own identity, meshing quirky and menacing alter egos together into a medley of trap, rock and pop.

Through what can feel like a constant onslaught of new talent striving for recognition, Bali Baby's ability to cultivate a persona that extends beyond the music to a full celebration of artistic self expression truly stands out. With a mood board that scans equal parts horror and calculated nod to pop culture, taking cues from no one but herself, Bali Baby is poised to push the envelope more than ever in 2018.

Brooklyn-Based Rock Band Evelyn Drops New EP "Slowly"

Evelyn music.jpg

Brooklyn-based indie quintet Evelyn has just released their second EP, "Slowly". The 4-track EP is a propulsive, emotionally-charged follow up to the group’s 2017 debut, "Light Full". Crafted by Dani Lencioni (songwriter, lead vocalist, and rhythm guitarist), her partner Drew Broussard (lead guitar), and close friend and longtime musical collaborator Zachary Joy Smith (bass), the recordings feature backing vocals by Jordan Kisner and drums by the band’s current drummer Brian Paul as well as Phillip Harris.

Lyrical, sonically rich, and at times playful, Slowly is an inquiry into desire, emotional disorientation, and self-acceptance. The songs were written as Lencioni settled into a serious relationship with Broussard and began to navigate the ways in which a pair of intense, deeply internal people can create a space full of love and support. The title track, “Slowly,” contemplates the futility of temperance at the beginning of a significant life change. Lencioni explains, “I had both just started seriously writing songs and also had just gotten out of a long-term relationship when I met Drew and then pretty quickly started this band. A friend told me an expression his grandfather used (in Spanish) which translated means ‘Dress me slowly, for I am in a hurry.’ Basically take your time with this important thing so you don’t mess it up. But I think by that point I was sick of being careful and was so anxious about the timeline of my life, and I felt like I was giving over to everything I actually wanted all at once. This album came from a sort of
conflation of joy and panic
.”

The last song on the EP, “Shadow,” personifies this anxiety as a shadow-self, a desperate, determined woman who visits the narrator uninvited, interrupting and disturbing her sprint towards happiness. The chorus is a driving question about the effect of anxiety and depression on a relationship: “Is my shadow gonna get me, or will I get to you / Is my shadow gonna eat us up?

Produced by Lora-Faye Ashuvud (Arthur Moon) and Andrew Sheron and recorded at Buddy Project in Queens, NY by Martin Fowler and Coral Audio in Princeton, NJ by Sheron, the songs on Slowly feature the band’s unique combination of vintage rock with carefully built harmonies and indie shimmer. A leap forward from their debut, the rhythms are more intricate, the song structures are more complex, the sound design — featuring elements like a vintage tape echo machine, a hand-roll piano played through a delay pedal, and performed stereo feedback— is more textured.

Throughout the album, one gets the sense that Lencioni is searching for clarity at hyper speed, catapulting through bouts of conflicting feelings: anger and sweetness, caution and desire, structure and space, safety and danger. Lencioni often finds inspiration by taking a word or idea from something she’s reading, an overheard phrase, a mundane coincidence — “Moon Head” was inspired by looking up from reading a horoscope to see a work of bizarre contemporary art (Ajay Kurian’s “Childermass”)— and transposing it onto a personal experience.

The album release will be accompanied by the debut of the band’s first music video, a collaboration between Lencioni, Kirstin Huber (award-winning graphic designer, dancer, Brooklyn Magazine’s 30 under 30), and innovative video artist Kameron Neal. The video finds a lone dancer (Huber) immersed in an abstract landscape –created by projecting analog watercolor paintings on the dancer, dressed all in white, against a white wall. Her movements vacillate from intentional to chaotic. Notably, Huber underwent double hip surgery at the age of 26, only after which did she decide to pursue her latent dream of becoming a dancer — so she relates to the song’s message. “The song perfectly encapsulates what my journey from disability to dancing has felt like. To me, it's about losing yourself and finding yourself at the same time. It's about taking a
plunge into something that you're scared of but want more than anything. I think anyone who's been deep in love or gone through a big transformation can relate to that,
” says Huber.

Interview: London Based Band Mama Moonshine

We recently connected with London based soul, rock and blues band Mama Moonshine for an exclusive interview to discuss their "Mr Shy" animated video and more...

Mama Moonshine.jpg

Mama Moonshine is a London based rock, soul, and blues band who has been tearing down the stage since 2013. They recently released an incredible animated video for their single "Mr Shy", directed by French illustrator and animator Louis Grosperrin. We connected with both the band and Louis for exclusive interviews and here is the first, featuring Mama Moonshine.

After reading our Q&A with the band, be sure to follow them on Facebook and go see them perform live in they pop up in your city; tell them DCWS sent you!

How did you all come together to form Mama Moonshine?

We met in a hazy London house party through friends, where I convinced the 4 of us to get together by singing in their ears and promising great things! Phil (lead guitarist) and I have been writing and performing together for years. We met the boys when we flew the nest and moved down south to London.

Tell us about the name "Mama Moonshine". How did that originate?

Finding a band name was the HARDEST thing. We had a lot of gigs booked when we were ready to perform live and had no name to give the venues! The pressure was building. We had one idea which is so bad I can't repeat it ... but after a lot of whiskey it did lead us to 'Mama Moonshine' The week before our first gig in Camden.

How did you connect with Louis for him to create the animated video for "Mr Shy"?

Louis and I connected through a mutual friend, which is one of the reasons I love working and collaborating with lots of different people. Louis's work is amazing and his video was the most phedellic and creative take on Mr Shy - which was exactly what we wanted. and it was a great experience and project for us both.

What can you tell us about the live album that is in development? Will "Mr Shy" be on it?

Mr Shy is most definitely on it! It is one of our core most well received tracks that we love. We are releasing a new song every 2 months from the live album and the next song to come is 'Me Me Mind'. A tale about a very self involved friend and this track introduces our new saxophonist!

What do you enjoy most about performing live for an audience and do you have a favorite cover song to play live?

I have always loved covering Moloko 'sing it back'. We make it super funky and really thicken up the bass line. It has such a good groove and gets people dancing. I've loved that tune for so long - I remember loving it when I went to my first disco! Does that show my age? Probably!!

If i could perform all day every day - I would. My favourite thing about singing live is putting on a cat suit, dancing like a crazy bitch and having my boys behind me giving it their all.

Guy Grogan.jpg

"Purgatorial Hearts" is the new release by Sante Fe based indie rock artist Guy Grogan. This album is Guy's 11th and perhaps most personal release to date. As with his previous records, he tracked all the parts himself and teamed up again with local award-winning Santa Fe musician and producer, Dennis Jasso at Fw Studios. The net result is a record that maintains Guy's reputation as a "self-avowed genre swinger", retains his trademark DIY vitality, but possesses a finesse and production quality his songs richly deserve. In speaking about the album, Guy says,

"Purgatorial Hearts" is a meditation on a collapsed relationship and, as the title suggests, an ode to others I encountered in the aftermath that were also navigating their way through the wreckage of their own relationship battlefields. Lyrically, this is not something I would choose to write about per se, but as a songwriter, I've learned that subjects have a way of choosing you until you have sufficiently told their story.

Hard Rock Duo Capital North Announce Debut EP, "Sea To Sky", Out March 2, 2018

Hard rock duo @capitalnorthca has announced details for their debut EP, "Sea To Sky", due for release on March 2nd, 2018...

Capital North.jpg

Hard rock dynamic duo Capital North has announced details for their debut EP, Sea To Sky, which has been set for release on March 2nd, 2018. Recorded at The Pie Studios in Pasadena, Sea To Sky was engineered by Nels Jensen (Sigur Rós, Jamie Foxx) with tracking by Devyn June, and mixed/mastered by Bertrand and Eric Poncet (of Chunk! No, Captain Chunk!) at Alias Studio. Comprised of ex-Lights In The Sky members Jonathan Farrar (Guitar/Vocals) and Anthony Zichella (Vocals), Capital North was formed after Farrar traveled the world for a year on a mission of soul searching while Zichella went on to graduate culinary school and pursue his passion as a chef, but both found their way back to music. Together, the duo have created a 6-track EP that discusses relatable topics from personal struggles like health, love, and loss to the human condition. The band had this to say about the EP:

"We are ecstatic to finally release our debut EP, Sea To Sky. This album marks a rebirth and transformation in the long-standing career of our previous project, Lights In The Sky, which has re-emerged as Capital North. The album centers around the concept of a lifecycle, and the struggles between birth and death. Much love to our fans for sticking by our side through this rebrand - we cannot wait to share this album with you!"

Sea To Sky EP.jpg

About Capital North:

Capital North is a hard rock dynamic duo from Pasadena, CA, consisting of Jonathan Farrar (Guitar/Vocals) and Anthony Zichella (Vocals). Formed in the summer of 2016 after the disbanding of their former pop-punk/post-hardcore band, Lights In The Sky, the two came together to form a band that would best showcase who they are as musicians and thus, Capital North was born. After the split of LITS, Farrar packed his bag and traveled the world for a year on a mission of soul searching while Zichella graduated from culinary school and moved to Portland to pursue his passion as a chef, but both found their way back to one thing; music. Before long, the two began planning the direction of what would be Capital North from separate continents. While traveling in Iceland, Farrar visited a unique and beautiful town called Akureyri, better known as the 'Capital of the North.' Leaving a lasting impression on him, he realized it accurately described the duo's current state of emotions as they strive to get back to what is important with "capital" being an integral place or feeling while "north" describes the direction in which to get there. Farrar shares, "Essentially, this name means getting back to what is important. That is what we have experienced time and time again - always straying, but always returning to music because it is such a vital aspect of our existence and being."

Interview: Low Blows Discusses His Newly Released Album "Flesh"

We connected with Low Blows aka Carlos Vergara for an exclusive interview to discuss his "Sucker" video, his latest EP "Flesh", and much more...

Low Blows interview.jpg

Low Blows is Carlos Vergara, a former member of the Chilean post-punk band Federación de Boxeo and the bassist of the darkwave band This Co. He just released a very innovative animated video entitled "Sucker", a song from his latest EP "Flesh". We connected with Carlos for an exclusive interview to discuss the "Sucker" video, his latest EP, and much more.

After reading our Q&A with Carlos, be sure to check out his website, follow him on Facebook and most importantly, stream/download the "Flesh" EP below.

Describe your creative process as a musician. What sparks your creativity when you write music?

I try to be creative all the time and because doing things, anything, is something that really fulfills me, I'm very lucky to have this pulse that cyclically makes me dig into arts, history, etc. That sparks my creativity.. the rest is try to reach a certain mood where everything just flows.

If you had to describe your music to a stranger in three words, which words would you select?

Noisy and melancholic.

Tell us about your experience as a member of Federación de Boxeo and This Co. and how that led you to where you are now as a solo artist?

Federación is the place to which I've always wanted to return. That was pure unspoken communication and 100% fun. This Co. was work, hard work for making something that in the end was very good and beautiful. Both of them are the experience that now helps me say what I want to say. Only me.

We really love your new video "Sucker". Explain for us how you came up with the treatment and who directed it?

It was really cool to work again with filmmaker Cristian Vidal, with whom we had already worked in the past with Federación de Boxeo. He is a very talented and creative guy, so he had total freedom. He asked me about my concerns, my lifestyle in Ibiza and what had that to do with the lyrics... then he came up with the idea, we thought about graphic references (El Bosco, The garden of earthly delights) and defined the color palette.

Tell us about your newly released EP "Flesh" and describe for us how it's different than your other releases.

We just released "Flesh" with Sister 9 Recordings, Manchester. It's my second EP and you can expect an upgrade in relation to the previous one "Holes to Fill" in every way. All the production was better and that certainly helped. Also, it's more raw and heartrending and I think I was able to reach deeper and more sincere feelings.

DC's Sub-Radio Will Cure Your ‘Holiday Hangover’ With Festive and Danceable EP

Just in time for the holidays @subradioband are taking their undeniable signature sound and making their mark with a festive EP entitled ‘Holiday Hangover'...

IMG_8625-min.jpg

There’s a ridiculously fun sound resonating out of Washington DC courtesy of Sub-Radio, a high energy band who make smart, danceable pop rock that's bound to have you smiling. Just in time for the holidays the sextet are taking their undeniable signature sound and making their mark with a festive EP entitled ‘Holiday Hangover.’ Featuring an original track, “Holiday Hangover,” that can be enjoyed by all and covers of Ariana Grande’s “Santa Tell Me” and Fall Out Boy’s “Yule Shoot Your Eye Out.”

When asked about the inspiration behind the project the band shared, “Holiday Hangover is the Sub-Radio version of the holiday season: a little introspection, a little more synth than sleigh bells, and a reminder that things can be fun and pure even in 2017. The inspiration for ‘Holiday Hangover’ [the song] was that feeling we've all had of waking up on New Year's Day, maybe a little worse for wear, and realizing that just because it's a new year doesn't mean anything's changed -- about the world or ourselves. But of course we can't do a holiday album without having a little fun, so we had to cover the New Queen of Christmas Our Lord and Savior Ariana Grande, with our own twist. We're less sexy and more goofy than her. The Fall Out Boy song... look, we've just been dreaming of releasing a Fall Out Boy song since we were all 12.”

The World Over Release Acoustic EP "Ventifact"

LA-based active rock band, @TWO_band has released their brand new EP entitled, "Ventifact"...

The World Over.jpg

LA-based active rock band, The World Over, has released their brand new EP entitled, Ventifact (Ventifact - EP by The World Over). This fan-inspired EP is a mirrored image of their 2016 smash, Mountains but re-imagined as an acoustic release giving the band a new sound, style, and feel for their beloved tunes. After a year of touring and much critical acclaim, The World Over have crafted a new rendition of their fan favorite EP, Mountains, which included single "Let Go," into a masterful 5-track acoustic EP. The 5-track acoustic EP was produced, recorded, engineered and mixed by Ryan Knecht, and mastered by Siegfried Meier at Beach Road Studios. The band expands on the significance of Ventifact, below:

"Ventifact was created as a tribute to both fans and our latest EP, Mountains. Mountains changed a lot things for the better within the band, changing our sound completely to cast a wider net to music listeners all the while trying to sound unique, heavy, and inspired. We feel as if it was a new beginning for us and we wanted to honour that with an acoustic reimagining of it, taking it one step further. Ventifact came together very smoothly and naturally being the first original music we've ever self produced. Each song is meticulously crafted to sound fresh but also familiar."
