H+ is a Bermudian IDM Glitch artist with a dub, funk and jazz twist. His new album is called "Hidden Dimensions", is comprised of ten songs and refers to ideas found in string or M theory. This basically states that matter is made up of vibrating strings that vibrate in 9 or 10 dimensions. These extra dimensions are only apparent at the Planke level or the smallest level.  This line of thinking corresponds with the level of detail in the music. H+ is hoping that listeners can hear the macroscopic form of the music, the level of detail in the chords that are used and the individual parts, right down to the delicate glitches and crazy edits at the micro level. Physics maths and music are all closely related. Sound is vibrations which corresponds to the vibrations found in string theory. This reminding the listener of a fundamental tones relationship to the overtones and how we perceive pitch and timbre. Yes there is a lot of intellectual thinking in the music that H+ creates but he also simply want the listener to enjoy the sounds created beyond the thought process that went into it.

Interview: Belgium-Based Urban Electronica Artist JoBee

DCWS sits down with urban electronica artist JoBee to talk about her ability to fuse genres, putting women in the front and what lies ahead for the future...

JoBee interview.jpeg

JoBee Project is an artist you need to know, originally from Poland but now residing in Belgium the multi-talented singer has the ability to take you on a journey through time and space. While she dabbles in soul, electro and gets hip hop producers on her project she is not limited to one genre. Not does she have a powerful voice, she’s also an activist and creator or all woman hip hop collective Supafly.

We sit down with JoBee and talk about her ability to fuse genres, putting women in the front and what lies ahead for the future.

Your album fuses so many genres together, is there one that sticks out to you the most?

Not really, I love them all, separate and together in a blended fashion. I used to be the leader of punk and grunge group, before I went into jazz education for several years. I do feel I am first of all a jazz singer, as that is how I started my training at the beginning of my musical journey, eventually experimented with electro, beats and trip hop or hip hop beats. It is a fusion indeed, and I really love it all. My melodies come from the heart, and the influences are countless. In Poland my album is listed under 'alternative' music and I love it, as I do see myself as alternative artist, even though at times it's 'too polished' and close to pop. I like to call it magic pop, cause why not?

You run women's collectives and are an activist, how important is it for you to stand up for woman in the industry?

Putting women in music and arts in the front has been of key importance for me for years. Empowered women should empower other women, and that was my starting point when, in 2009, I met Jeanette Petri aka Jee Nice, the editor in chief of Anattitude Magazine (the first and only existing international Hip Hop magazine on print, to present the female side of Hip Hop culture), when she was about to finish the 3rd issue of her magazine. I was already at that time running my radio show on Fm Brussel radio, and thought I could help out to connect with other music minded people, as I instantly loved her work so much! Together we decided to throw a big release event in Brussels! We wanted to bring together a team of creative and motivated ladies with a heart for hip hop, exactly in the spirit of Anattitude. We got together the urban photographer Lizairo, CYMO-blogger & music manager Nadia-O, singer/DJ Fatoosan, music manager Vaneeshua and musician/DJ MikiGold.  It was instantly clear that we were on the same page when it came to the rich culture of hip hop. Our first event took place in October 2009 at Tavernier in Brussels and was a huge success. That’s when Supafly Collective was born as a collective and started a long-lasting and inspiring journey. In 2010 we got a weekly live radio show on BRUZZ, the capital’s largest radio station. I have been a radio host already since 2008, so I moved from Implosief to Supafly radio show.

It has been a beautiful and enriching journey, it is so important to highlight the presence of women in music, and specifically in hip hop, oftentimes I am the only girl on the line up of music events, that has to change, that is my main drive also as feminist and  activist and artist, and I will never stop!

What projects are you working on next?

A real bee is always busy buzzing and creating, so is me, JoBee! Future looks very bright! I am currently working on several collaborations with both female and male rappers, several producers, as well as on my own EP with a Belgian producer!

You are about to hear more about JoBee in near future! New videos coming up as well, I am working with an amazing creative film director from Poland. Also, concerts and a new tour from spring! Stay tuned fly bees.

Who would you love to collaborate with?

If I could collaborate with anyone! The list is countless, but if I had to choose one living artist today that would be Flying Lotus! Yes! We met for the first time in LA in 2008, and I remember playing his tunes on the radio in Belgium when he was still unknown at that time, blew up very rapidly! Then we had a chance to hang out in Rotterdam with him and my Supafly crew in 2009- fly times- I wonder if he still remembers me! Need to ring him.

Who do you listen to on repeat now and why?

My music is very eclectic. Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins and Rage Against the Machine rocked my teens and I was a punk band leader for years. Then I took a break and I turned to jazz and pop - I love Michael Jackson, Amy Winehouse, Erykah Badu, and Bjork.

At the moment I'm listening a lot to Bjork and Fatima, they are a huge source of inspiration. I also listen to a lot of rap. Princess Nokia and Cardi B are very inspiring characters because her music is a mix of hip-hop and punk. It's all the punk attitude!

Any chance you'd come over to the states and perform?

Absolutely yes! I already did a tour in NYC in 2013 with over 10 gigs I miss and I think its high time to fly back! I love the States! See you soon!

Sneaker Pimps Alumni Chris Corner Releases Album "Alive In New Light" Under New Project IAMX

Emerging from an intense depression, @IAMX (aka Chris Corner) has released his brand new LP 'Alive In New Light', a cinematic celebration of breaking free from demons...

Chris Corner.jpg

Emerging from an intense depression, IAMX (aka Chris Corner) has released his brand new LP 'Alive In New Light', a cinematic celebration of breaking free from demons that have long plagued his mind.

'Alive In New Light' captures the giddy phase of metamorphosis when you are no longer what you were but not yet fully what you are becoming; it's both a 'thank you' to fans and an invitation to the next phase in IAMX's intoxication journey.

'Alive In New Light' was recorded, performed and mixed by Corner in the California desert in a trailer facing mountain; it puts a majestic spin on alternative electronica thanks to Corner's powerful vocals and larger than life production.

"The desert is white noise. You can lose yourself in the details of producing, mixing; it's just silence," said Corner.

Transformation is at the core of 'Alive In New Light', IAMX explores the complexities of mutation through sound, visual art, make up and intimate merchandise with the unflinching ferocity fans have come to expect.

"This album is about connecting, and it's a pain in the ass to do it through an album. Each time I do this, I feel exhausted but it's an impulse I can't stop. If you write your pain out, there's a venting. Happiness is a skill. I'm happiest activating skills that keep you balanced," said Corner.

The 'Alive In New Light' celebration doesn't just end with the music, it also features a line of erotic merchandise inspired by the album artwork design by Ryan Clark for Invisible Creature.

The album features four tracks from postmodern tattoo and makeup powerhouse, kindred spirit and super-fan, Kat Von D.

"We could easily swap closets and makeup drawers and no one would be able to tell the difference. We both create, not because we want to, but because we have to," said Von D about working with Corner.

Seattle-based producer Sango is back to announce the release date and tracklisting for his forthcoming album. "In The Comfort Of" will arrive on March 16th via Last Gang, and includes features from Jesse Boykins III, JMSN, Smino and more. In addition to the announcement, Sango is sharing a new video. "Sweet Holy Honey" features Xavier Omär, and is accompanied by a visual courtesy of director Jon Salmon.

"The inspiration for the video actually comes from the underlying meaning of the song," explains Sango. "I want the viewer/ listener to piece it together on their own so, I won't give too much away. 'Sweet Holy Honey' stems from cherishing the existence of women and the gift they bring to the world. When I approached Xavier Omär with this idea, I wanted him to write about how it may feel when you hold back the urge to have sex with a woman that you're in love with. It's not a typical love song."

In December, Sango released a short film titled "South End set to "One More Thing," the fifth track from "In The Comfort Of". Watch "Sweet Holy Honey" (feat. Xavier Omär), and find the previously released South End as well as album art and tracklisting for "In The Comfort Of" below.

Interview: San Francisco Based Producer Poplar Tree Talks About His New EP "Paper Places"

We connected with San Francisco based producer @nicholasyiu for an exclusive interview to discuss his new EP "Paper Places", find out how he managed to juggle his career and music...

Poplar Tree interview.jpg

Poplar Tree aka Nicholas Yiu is a San Francisco based producer and engineer who just released a six-song EP entitled "Paper Places" (check out our review HERE). We connected with Poplar Tree for an exclusive interview to discuss the EP, find out how he managed to juggle his career and music, as well as how he connected with the featured artists who appear on "Paper Places".

After reading our Q&A with Poplar Tree, be sure to stream/download "Paper Places" and follow him on his social media streams to stay up to date on what's next from this talented producer.

Tell us about your stage name Poplar Tree; what does it personify for you?

My EP Paper Places is very emotional and close to my heart. In 2017, I moved to a city called Alameda in the San Francisco area and the EP tells the story of my first year in a new life in a new city, new job, new relationships, new friends, and new opportunities. When I finally finished my EP, I was wondering what to name it when I started reading the “Alameda” Wikipedia page. In Spanish, Alameda means “grove of poplar trees” and I thought it would be fitting to dedicate the EP to the city, my home. As an added bonus, it was really cool that the poplar “populus” species was the first tree whose full DNA code had been determined by DNA sequencing.

Congratulations on the release of your "Paper Places" EP. Tell us about your creative process for the project. How long did it take to write and record?

Thank you for having me on this interview! I’ve been wanting to produce an original EP since 2015 but didn’t know how or where to start. I really started thinking about it in May 2017, looking at who I wanted to work with and what I wanted it to be about. My musical inspirations were Ember Island, Owl City, Emmit Fenn, and Porter Robinson. It took 6 months to finish my EP from lyric writing to mastering, and 2 months for design and release, about 8 months in total.

Paper Places EP.png

Were there any songs that you decided not to include on the EP? If so, why?

I had two songs that I decided to leave off the EP, “Mazes” and “Outro”, originally intended as opening and closing songs. Both were instrumental and in the end, I wanted my first EP to be focused on the human voice as the centerpiece, so I decided to exclude those two tracks.

How did you connect with your vocalist collaborators on the EP, Megan McDuffee, Rosendale, and Shannon Tse?

I really think the human voice is the most beautiful instrument, and I am so fortunate to have met the awesome people I collaborated with. Megan McDuffee is a rockstar game developer and film music composer who I met on Craigslist, who has been so awesome to work with. Rosendale (aka Brian Wang) is a good friend I met during my college years at UC Berkeley, where we sang in the same acapella group (Go Bears!). Shannon Tse is a medical student in the UK and a 3rd connection friend who I met through a friend back in Hong Kong where I grew up, and though we’ve never met in person (yet), we clicked immediately. I like working with vocalists from a wide range of life and geographical backgrounds to get different and unique musical flavors in my tracks.

You're not just a musician, you work full-time as an engineer at a smart glass startup. How do you juggle your 9-5 responsibilities with your creative side as an artist and producer?

I try to find time after work a few days per week to play with ideas and collaborations. It’s so much fun to work on music projects, so I always look forward to it when I get home. I also enjoy doing little “sprints” on the weekend where I sit and produce uninterrupted for a few hours straight. The juggling is tiring, but so worth it!

Review: Poplar Tree's "Paper Places" EP

If cover art were ever an indication of what a project might sound like, "Paper Places" by @nicholasyiu definitely delivers a sound that correlates with its space themed artwork...

Paper Places EP.png

If cover art were ever an indication of what a project might sound like, "Paper Places" by Poplar Tree, definitely delivers a sound that correlates with its space themed artwork. The EP’s intro track “Cradle”, helps set the mood of the entire project by delivering a smooth, spacey instrumental accompanied by angelic vocals from Megan McDuffee. The project’s second track, “Faces”, is a more love driven piece, featuring vocal appearances from Elizabeth Grace & Shannon Tse. Our favorite track from the entire project, “Time”, provides a sound that will have you reminiscing on all of your past failed relationships and have your wondering what could have been. The EP ends on a strong note with another strong vocal appearance by Shannon Tse in "Paper Place", layering her unique sound over a new-age acoustic type of arrangement.

Poplar Tree interview.jpg

All in all, Poplar Tree's four track "Paper Places" EP is a very well put together project that taps into a musical genre that you do not hear everyday on popular radio (*that is a good thing). Poplar Tree successfully took sounds, samples and instruments that most would deem “experimental” or “dreamy”, and crafted a masterpiece that’s ahead of its time. If he sticks with the same recipe, Poplar Tree has the capacity to be the face of a new sub-genre.

Keys N Krates Drops New Single "Do What You Do" and Share Details About Their Upcoming Album and Tour

Toronto-based live electronic act @keysnkrates are back to share their new single "Do What U Do"...

Keys N Krates new music

Toronto-based live electronic act Keys N Krates are back to share a new single. "Do What U Do" follows recently released Boxing Day giveaway "Flute Loop (feat. Ouici)" and is a soulful and cinematic offering from the trio. Through warm chords and harmonious vocal samples, the Canadians use retro-soul ideas to fuse a nostalgia-inducing future classic. "Do What U Do" is the third single from Keys N Krates' forthcoming debut album, Cura, arriving in early 2018 via Dim Mak Records.

Says Greg on "Do What U Do," "We wanted to channel the spirit of Dilla and Premiere. We drew from their style of quirky swung sample chops to create a fun summery vibe in the first half of the song switching to a more intense cinematic vibe in the second half of the song."

Cura is shaping up to be some of the strongest work yet from the Juno Award-winning trio. The album's first single "Glitter" has found widespread love at radio, with support from tastemakers KCRW, Beats 1 (Anna Lunoe, Julie Adenuga) and Sirius XM's "Chill." The follow-up single "Flute Loop (feat. Ouici)" dominated Spotify, landing on New Music Friday playlists in 9 countries and trended across Viral Charts (Global Viral 50 ${"["}#32], United States Viral 50 ${"["}#17] and Canada Viral 50 ${"["}#19]).

Cura will be supported by an extensive headlining tour, with the North American leg kicking off on January 24th in Buffalo, NY and running through the spring. The group is also announcing that they will play sets at Ultra Music Festival and Electric Forest.

In other news, the group's "Dum Dee Dum" single has recently achieved RIAA gold status. Given that the song never received significant radio airplay, this milestone is a testament to the scope of the group's grassroots popularity.

Interview: Houston Based Afro-House Songstress Skyrah Bliss

Our latest exclusive interview is with Houston based Afro-House songstress @skyrahbliss

Skyrah Bliss interview.jpg

Our latest exclusive interview is with Houston based Afro-House songstress Skyrah Bliss. This talented artist on the rise, of African-American and Salvadoran heritage, has been featured on Matthew Knowles’ MTV reality series, Breaking From Above, and was showcased at Revolt TV’s Local Love Tour: Houston, and will be dropping her LP, "Vacate" in the next few months. All these past highlights and what's to come have placed Skyrah Bliss is a great position to be the next big thing in the music industry, so it's only right that we connect with her for this Q&A.

What do you enjoy most about being an artist and what do you hate the most?

What I enjoy about being an artist is being able to express myself freely and through those expressions, I'm able to make others happy! It may sound like a cliche but my passion for music is mostly driven by allowing my audience to escape into pure freedom with me.

What I hate most? I guess it would be allowing myself to be vulnerable enough to ask for a helping hand when needed. I'm learning to embrace it more because the further I go in my journey, I realize that I can't do this alone. I have the best team any artist could ever ask for!

Tell us about your experiences on "Breaking From Above" and at Revolt TV’s Local Love Tour: Houston. How do you think those placements have prepared you for stardom?

My TV experience definitely helped shape my career for the better. I've learned so many things from choreographer Danielle Polanco. She has helped me become an overall better performer. Frank Gatson gave amazing words of encouragement that I still carry with me today. That experience alone developed layers of tough skin and motivation to keep striving for my dreams no matter what!

Revolt TV's Local Love Tour was an outer body experience. I honestly submitted to the tour thinking that my music was to different and that they wouldn't chose me because of it. So when I was selected, you could imagine the amount of excitement exuding from my heart! I was accompanied by my favorite local band called Live Out Loud Band and we put on a great show! Knowing that I was hand selected for this tour was confirmation to never give up!

The style of music you create is hard to pigeonhole, which is a benefit, because it allows you to pull in fans of different genres ranging from Tropic House and RnB to Hip-Hop. Was this always your plan or did you fall into this gumbo of musical diversity?

When I go into a creative space, It's VERY rare that I go in with specific genre in mind. I may have an particular vibe I'm looking for when I sit down with one of my producers but it's never planned. We'd have a jam session and whatever brainchild came out in the music would always be magical. I fell in love with House music during the process of writing this album. Thinking nothing of it, I was dabbling here and there writing and creating on super "vibey" tracks. When I sat down with trusted producers and made a few more tracks, I decided that I couldn't keep this sound from the world. EVERYONE should hear this! So it wasn't my plan but I'm glad I'm open to trying new sounds - flexibility is so worth it!

Your hometown of Houston has provided us many legendary artists and groups over the past 30 years in Hip-Hop and RnB/Soul. Who have been some of the local artists who've made it big that inspire you?

Being that I'm a young lady and grew up with Destiny's Child, I have to put them as my number one influence. All of the members have grown into their own and shine in their own way and I love that about them. Beyonce's work ethic and quality productions she puts together year after year is also something I admire. I'm so proud to be a Houstonian and when I travel, I do my due diligence to make sure EVERYONE knows I'm from Houston, TX!

Describe your upcoming LP "Vacate" for us. Would you say that your two released singles “I I I” and “Green Light” are reflective of the type of sound we can expect from it? Also, have you decided on a release date yet?

Vacate is an album you can play at anytime of the day to mentally escape to your favorite vacation spot! "Green Light" and "I I I" are just a sample of what you'll experience with my album. Honestly If you love feel good music, you'll enjoy this project for sure. With the release date - we're shooting for the end of February!

Thank you DOPECAUSEWESAID for taking the time out to listen to my music and get to know me better as an artist - can't wait to hear what you think about the album! All love and light - Skyrah.

"Blind Experiment" is the newly released EP by Swiss 'abstract minimal trip hop' artist Yvan Poisson, and is comprised of eight tracks. In speaking about the EP, Yvan says:

"With this EP I continue exploring the possibilities from granular sampling, this is where the sounds come from, except for the beats and the bass lines. Once again this is music for the audio enthusiasts; you simply won't enjoy it listening through a poor sound system with no deep bass and at a low volume. This only shines when you are in an appropriate listening situation (and mind). Also, this is not instrumental hip hop and it is not intented for people to rap on it, so please don't judge it in this way."

Vancouver duo HUMANS have announced the release date for their upcoming ‘The Feels’ EP. The record is out January 26th digitally & on 150 gram blue vinyl, limited to 400, via Haven Sounds. The album includes the previously released tracks ‘Boys & Girls’ and ‘The Feels’. The trippy dance visuals for ‘Boys & Girls’ translates the band’s 2D animations into an interactive 3D space and the VR for ‘The Feels’ puts the viewer directly into a space of unease, prodding them forward, as the track builds to a nightmarish warehouse rave.

The band are also giving you an amazing opportunity to remix “Sip It”, a chill electro banger from the forthcoming EP. Awash with huge synths, 909's and a mellow vibe that's perfect for remixing.

Head over to SKIO to find out all the details!

HUMANS will be embarking on a string of shows across Canada this January to celebrate the EP release.

LA Based EDM Artist Zenxienz Drops New Album "Cosmosis"

zenxienz's new album "Cosmosis" is all about capturing the abstraction of each moment and expressing the inexpressible...

zenxienz.jpg

zenxienz states that "Cosmosis is all about capturing the abstraction of each moment and expressing the inexpressible. With every album, I dive deeper into my subconscious world through the process of creation. The further I go, the more I feel an effortless merging of emotions, sounds, and sights. My latest release takes listeners through an evolution and reemergence of the senses".

Sometimes you have to lose your mind to find your soul. When Hong Kong-born music producer and artist zenxienz (pronounced ZEN-SCIENCE), aka Cameron Williamson, found himself in the grips of depression, that’s exactly what happened. After struggling for years with a creative block which nearly consumed his love of music, Cameron one day sparked a perpetual flame in himself in summer of 2016 by dedicating his time and energy to creating a new track every day (and eventually adding digital art to the equation). zenxienz was born out of the idea that music is a true journey of the mind. A two-year finalist in the International Songwriting Competition and a Na Hoku Hanohano-nominated artist, zenxienz developed a knack for capturing beauty in the soul-wrenching moments of life that make his instrumentals transform you in a unique, introspective way while still maintaining a groove that keeps you moving.

Growing up on the island of Kaua‘i in Hawai‘i, the tropical landscape fed his developing artistic mind. With a wide range of influences from the purely electronic to eastern and tribal sounds, incorporating nearly everything in between, zenxienz pushes the boundaries of EDM, jazz, and psychedelia with every subsequent release. Each new song blends internal demons and rediscovered passion into a work of art. With his album, Cosmosis, zenxienz aims to create a sense of wonder in the listener and a feeling of merging with the universe that usually only comes from a state of oneness and selflessness.

zenxienz now avidly spreads awareness and hope for those suffering from mental illness and advocates for a positive shift in the current atmosphere surrounding psychedelics and psychedelic therapy to provide more options to those in need. In the hope of providing both entertainment and education on the topic, zenxienz’s live shows are a perfect potpourri of visuals, music, and message. zenxienz provides a means of turning a mirror on society with his captivating instrumentals and animations, all while inspiring, and promoting change and connection with other human beings. One can expect to leave zenxienz’s performances with the feeling of being taken on an adventure and emerging with an open heart, mind, and soul.
