Stream "Brighter Days", the Brand New Album by Composer/Producer Blunda

Blunda is the solo project of LA based composer/producer Andy Blunda; his new album "Brighter Days" contains both instrumental and vocal tracks geared towards taking you on a journey to wide open spaces.

Blunda is the solo project of LA based composer/producer Andy Blunda. Blunda, a classically trained pianist in college, was the guitarist and keyboard player for the bands Fastball and Paloalto in the late 90s and early 2000s. He also toured with artists Jason Falkner (Jellyfish, Beck, St. Vincent) and Zoe Bonham playing guitar and keyboards.

There isn't a single one of us who hasn't wondered over the past few years if better days are coming, of if they're even possible. Blunda wonders the same thing. Luckily, he's been perfecting his musical craftsmanship for so long that he's able to seamlessly portray familiar feelings and atmospheres through his surreal yet accessible compositions. His new album "Brighter Days" contains both instrumental and vocal tracks geared towards taking you on a journey to wide open spaces.

“This album came out of wanting to creating a space and feeling that would transport the listener. I found myself going on tons of hikes this past year with my son and exploring all these amazing places just outside of the city. I really wanted to create something that gave the feeling of being in all these wide open spaces. Especially after all the lockdowns of the last couple of years. I love music that takes you out of reality and puts you into a feeling or place. That inspired me as I worked on the songs and gave me the freedom to let them be. With or without vocals.”

Check out “Brighter Days” below, stream it on your preferred music service and connect with Blunda on his social media.

Ben Ryan is a singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist from Vancouver, Canada who recently released his debut EP "Abacus". In speaking about the EP, Ben states that,

"The title of the album may seem vague, as many album titles are. I called it Abacus because before pursuing music, I was studying economics at the University of British Columbia. Feeling unhappy and burnt out, I decided to take some time off to record this album and really discover who I am as a person. To me, an abacus is a symbol of identification, they are supposed to be a tool used for math, but you only ever see them in play areas at doctors offices. This album is inspired by the idea of pursuing life as an entertainer as opposed to a calculator.

Pearl Charles Releases Debut Album "Sleepless Dreamer"

@pearl_charles has just released her debut album "Sleepless Dreamer" and recently kicked off a tour in support of the new project...

Pearl Charles music.jpg

Pearl Charles is back to release her debut album "Sleepless Dreamer", available now via Kanine Records. Pearl recently kicked off a tour in support of the new project at the Echo in Los Angeles and will play 13 shows along the West Coast in the coming month. Pearl is also set to perform at SXSW in Austin in March.

Charles has been playing music since she was 5 years old. At 18, she formed country duo The Driftwood Singers with Christian Lee Hutson, singing and playing guitar and autoharp. At 22, she joined garage rock band The Blank Tapes as drummer. After two fun-filled years immersed in the rock and roll lifestyle, she decided it was time to pursue her own songwriting, and began developing the songs that formed 2015's eponymous debut EP. Her music career has been a chronological progression from old time music to 60's garage and psychedelia, 70's country rock, 80's soft rock and country disco -- her own synthesis of those influences (best evidenced by new single "Night Tides"). Drawn to poppy hooks and catchy choruses, Charles draws on what she loves about each era while developing her unique style as a solo artist.

Hear "Sleepless Dreamer" and see below for tour routing and full details on the new project.

10 Songs You May Not Have Heard in 2017 (That You Really Should)

These ten songs are not only some of my favorites released in 2017, they are also tracks that I think should have gotten much more attention...

Close Encounters.jpg

The ten songs below are not only some of my favorites released in 2017, they are also tracks that I think should have gotten much more attention. Give each a spin to take a trip through some of 2017’s best.

1. “too bad” by dollys

“too bad” is the great intro track to dolly’s final album, “tense,” released in July 2017. It’s also too bad it was their last album, because it’s a great one.

2. “Plimsoll Punks” by Alvvays

Alvvays got its fair share of attention in 2017, but it was tracks like “In Undertow” and “Dreams Tonite,” with their official video releases, that were the face of the album. “Plimsoll Punks” and “Not My Baby” might be the best on the album (though it’s a great release from beginning to end).

3. “Close Encounters” by C.R. and the Degenerates

This track would have been a perfect inclusion in Twin Peaks: The Return, and it’s a bit of a different sound for C.R. and the Degenerates. Thankfully, it works, creating a moody, introspective, dreamy song you won’t forget.

4. “Pls” by Flower Crown

If Slowdive’s self-titled 2017 release wasn’t enough shoegaze for you, then dive into Flower Crown.

5. “Global Warming” by Binary Star

Reminiscent of “Mathematics” by Mos Def, both with an immediately engaging beat and with the weight of each verse.

6. “Expect The Bayonet” by Sheer Mag

With a bass line as catchy as any classic Motown tune, but mixed with some grit and a punk ethos, “Expect The Bayonet,” is well worth repeated listening.

7. “Learning Curve” by Make-Overs

South Africa’s Make-Overs bring us fuzzy, noisy, pure garage goodness with “Learning Curve.” From beginning to end it sounds as if the track is about to burst apart, but it just barrels forward with a track that must be even better live than it is on record.

8. “I Was A Fool” by Sunflower Bean

Another great female/male vocal trade-off from Sunflower Bean, driven forward by a bass line that keeps you bouncing from beginning to end.

9. “Couch Surfin USA” by YJY

Technically this track was released in 2015, but the updated version was also released on YJY’s first (and sadly last) full-length album in 2017. There’s a reason they included it on both their debut 2015 EP and their final full-length—it’s great.

10. “Daisy” by Wavves

This is a new sound from Wavves, with some strange, but awesome samples included alongside their beachy, California punk ethos.

Exclusive Premiere: "Burn Up Alive" by HiRSH

DCWS is unleashing Los Angeles-based alt-pop artist @imhirsh new music video for the anthemic “Burn Up Alive” as an exclusive premiere today...

HiRSH exclusive feature - Burn Up Alive.JPG

DCWS is unleashing Los Angeles-based alt-pop artist HiRSH's new music video for the anthemic “Burn Up Alive” as an exclusive premiere today.  The track explores the angst that comes along with artistic creation and quiet desperation of desire - the need to break through and be truly seen and heard, as well as the fear of disappearing and the pain of being invisible.

HiRSH says of “Burn Up Alive”:

Henry David Thoreau said, “Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and die with their song still inside them.” This song explores just that. The need to create and express, and the fear that it will never be heard. That it will get stuck inside or lost along the way. Its intense but totally real, just like the struggle.

Enjoy the "Burn Up Alive" visuals (directed by Cameron Uranick) and be sure to follow HiRSH on his social media streams below.

About HiRSH:

HiRSH grew up in Northern California, where he devoured his father’s large record collection. His musical tastes run the gamut, from classic rock to Bay Area hip-hop to indie rock and electro pop, and once he started making his own, he couldn’t stop.

HiRSH started his solo project in early 2016, when he realized he had music pouring out of him and felt the need to pursue it. Always looking for the perfect melody, lyric, and sound to draw out pure feeling in his listeners, his sound is ever evolving. That being said, HiRSH has already established a signature sound, penning songs centered around themes of freedom, expression and the constant pursuit of both.

Baltimore's DRMCTHR Release Debut Album "Hold Your Love"

Baltimore alternative pop band @DRMCTHRBND have just released their debut full-length album, "Hold Your Love", via Darkshore Music Group...

Drmcthr.jpg

Baltimore alternative pop band DRMCTHR are thrilled to release their debut full-length album, Hold Your Love, via Darkshore Music Group.  The album contains 11-infectiously catchy tracks that were recorded at Valencia Recording and produced by DRMCTHR & Paul Leavitt. The band's dynamic sound recently caught the attention of HuffPost who teamed up with the band to premiere the official music video for the album's latest single, "Blacked Out," which was shot and directed by Joe Perri. The band also caught the attention of idobi Radio who exclusively streamed the album in full on their site yesterday as a treat to fans who have been anxiously waiting for the album's release. On Hold Your Love Chelsea Tyler states:

"Hold Your Love means everything to us and we couldn't be more grateful to work with a group of people who have embraced this record and put everything they could into it. It was a difficult record to make and we are elated to finally share it with you!" - Chelsea Tyler

DRMCTHR has been turning heads with an atmospheric sound that falters the line between indie rock and pop with light-hearted shoegaze instrumentals that create a dreamy ambience. Consisting of Chelsea Tyler (vocals), Bryan Czap (guitar), Craig Perkins (bass), and Billy Wahler (drums), the band made their debut in December 2013 with the release of their first EP, Wonderlust. Produced at Mystery Ton Studios & Valencia Recording by Kenny Eaton, Paul Leavitt, & DRMCTHR, Wonderlust has garnered over 70,000 plays on Spotify. The band soon went on to play a variety of shows, sharing the stage with bands such as Spitalfield, Post Modern, Geoff Rickly, Aaron West & The Roaring Twenties, Rookie of the Year, Modern Chemistry, Owel, and more.

Having faced several challenges since the release of Wonderlust, including member changes and at one point the near end of the band, DRMCTHR is back with a newfound confidence. A change in spelling of the band's name marks a new era for DRMCTHR as it represents the loss they have experienced, but also a bolder, stronger representation of who they have become. The band has returned with a refined style and sound as they prepare to debut their full-length LP, Hold Your Love. On the record, vocalist Chelsea Tyler states:

"We've spent every second of time, every dollar, everything on this record for the past 4 years. We struggled with keeping the band together, wrote with different musicians, went through different versions of the mixes, re-tracked some of the record - basically, everything that could go wrong while making a record did. There were days where we didn't know if the band would make it, if the record would come out, or if we'd even finish the record. Every step forward would be followed with a road block, and then a few steps back. Every song has a story about the creation of this album. During the creation of this record we lost friendships, bandmates, were in a van accident - again, everything went wrong. But, we persevered and created something that we are so proud of.

DRMCTHR emerges from the turmoil strong with the new LP, Hold Your Love, and thrilled to share their art with their fans new and old.

Seattle's The Complex Dialect Announce Debut Album "Change"

Seattle's 8-piece progressive outfit @complexdialect are thrilled to announce the official details for their debut album, "Change"...

The Complex Dialect - PhotoCredit Hanna Stevens.jpg

Seattle's 8-piece progressive outfit The Complex Dialect are thrilled to announce the official details for their debut album, Change, which has been set for December 1, 2017. Produced at Seattle's infamous London Bridge Studios by Eric Lilavois (Saint Motel, Atlas Genius, Surfer Blood) and mastered by Ed Brooks (Fleet Foxes, Death Cab for Cutie, Pearl Jam), Change is a representation of both "problem" and "solution" perspectives when engaging with the ever-changing world we deal with in present time. For a taste of the album, check out the politically-charged track, "Capitalism". "Capitalism" is a track that guitarist Earnie Ashwood describes:

"Capitalism is about living in an economically unforgiving society that is controlled by corporations and the top 1%. The song calls out the external conditioning that creates said economic state while at the same time draws attention to the personal decisions we make that contributes to our own social economic oppression. The brands we buy, how we spend our currency (the most important currency being time), and how we constantly have our financial status on our minds are large contributors towards a system that strips away many of the qualities that make up our very humanity. The song is about taking a step outside of oneself and challenging the personal ignorance of the unwilling contributions one makes to their own personal subjugation." - Earnie Ashwood

On the release of Change, he further states:

"Words will never be able to express what it means to us to be able to complete and share this album. From the beginning it has been our goal to provide a realistic perspective of where the world stands, and to provide connection and comfort in knowing that we all are not alone in facing challenging issues. It is our sincere hope that this album brings a sense of collective bonding, while providing a safe space for inner reflection and true personal change." - Earnie Ashwood

The Complex Dialect is a collective of musicians from Seattle, Washington, bound together by a need for growth and true expression. Formed by Earnie Ashwood (Guitar), Lola Campbell (Vocals), Bobby McGranahan (Bass), Gibraltar (Guitar), Craig Cinderich (Keys), Adam Cignatta (Vocals), Oz La'brae (Drums), and Deadmics (MC/Vocals), the 8-piece outfit reflects our tumultuous societal climate by pushing the boundaries of time signatures and thriving within atypical progressions. The Complex Dialect's songs focus on the subject matter of uncomfortable truths as they use their platform to process how they feel, creating an interwoven conversation of ideas and reactions through their music. The Complex Dialect aims to encourage anyone who is struggling: "We look for non-conventional solutions to conventional problems. We strive to be the change we want to see in the world."

Change Track Listing:
1.  Radar
2. No Man's Land
3. Rude
4. Fall
5. Capitalism
6. One Constellation
7. Looking For A Friend For The End Of The World
8. Change

Experimental Electronic/Alternative Duo Aurganic Releases "Distant Echoes & Close Encounters" Album

Electronic rock duo Aurganic has released their new album “Distant Echoes & Close Encounters”, which contains an enormous amount of emotion and expression, intelligent, well written lyrics, and packed with experimental...

Aurganic artwork.jpg

Aurganic is a window into a collaborative thought and emotion of two individuals who dedicate most of their time to the craft of music and sound creation. Separated by distance and connected by technology Aurganic was one of the original online collaboration projects to appear last decade. Rooted in friendship, the project proved its longevity with four independent releases to date.

Aurganic is an experimental electronic/alternative studio project of two long-time friends Michael Kossov and Leo Pisaq. Originally high school classmates, they were members in a number of local punk rock bands until life and distance separated them for a number of years. They reconnected musically in 2010 finding a lot of common ground. This time it was electronica, art rock and jazz that dominated the ideas. The reunited duo recorded instrumental sessions in New York and worked on their completion via internet resulting in a self-titled EP. They soon discovered how well they complimented each other with Leo's strong production skills and Mike's compositional ideas.

Aurganic.jpg

Taking the project to the next level, Aurganic released a self-produced full-length album entitled "Life as a Canvas" in March of 2012. The album included multiple vocal and instrumental guest appearances from local Toronto artists. As a result, the new material emphasized the introduction of song writing to the duo's sound. "Life as a Canvas" was well received by the public, praising the clever mix of live and electronic instruments as well as pristine technical execution.

The sophomore full length "Deviations" followed in September 2013. On this album Aurganic had fully switched to the songwriting approach, having only one instrumental track. The effort includes familiar vocal guest appearances found on "Life as a Canvas", as well as vocal work by Aurganic. The sound has a strong emphasis on mood and atmosphere. The electronic elements are subtler and tend to complement the live instruments. The album was featured on major publications such as Examiner.com, Huffington Post, IX Daily, Absolute Punk and Indie Shuffle Blog. The music from "Deviations" was licensed to MTV series "MADE" and Sundance Channel series "Push Girls".

In September 2017 Aurganic came back with the third full length release "Distant Echoes & Close Encounters". Joey Aguirre was recruited to handle drums and Michael laid all the vocals on the record. The album was completely self-produced giving unlimited creative and production freedom. While overall songwriting is similar to Deviations, post rock and synth rock influences permeate this record from its beginning to an end.

FOOL HEAVY Release Debut Full-Length "Gusto"

The ‘90s are back in a big way- just ask Long Island garage-rock duo @FoolHeavy...

Fool Heavy.jpg

The ‘90s are back in a big way- just ask Long Island garage-rock duo Fool Heavy. Seamlessly melding elements of the era’s grunge and alternative wave they’ve forged a sound that’s somehow both nostalgic - in its carefree self-deprecation and Cobain-esque guitars - and modern, with a steadfast aggression akin to today's apathetic millennia. Fool Heavy’s got the guts, the glory, and just the right amount of angst to bring forth the best parts of the musical culture that defined a generation. Generation X, that is.

The band’s inaugural LP, Gusto which is out today and available as a pay-what-you-want release on Bandcamp, pays homage to a world that’s grown sarcastic, impatient, and sick of being unheard. The eight-song debut calls upon a youthful apathy, with outrageous highs and flickering lows in way that’s cathartic, familiar, and unapologetically honest. Singer-songwriter Taylor Berke (ex-Soda Bomb) and co-vocalist Sam Coughlin are unafraid to hold a mirror to themselves in a raw display of conviction in both the delivery, and the message itself – life is shitty; live it up while you can. Through the span of the record, they’ll convince you to do just that.

Michael Abiuso of The Gay Blades and The Venetia Fair recorded, mixed, and mastered Gusto at Behind the Curtains Media‘s studio in a way that raises a glass to its ‘90s predecessors. Dialing in thrashing drums, melodic mid-range bass and a hell of a lot of reverb, Abiuso serves as both producer and puppet-master to hone in a sound that’s unique to the duo. Each note, each squeal of feedback, and each and every distorted holler feels relevant and important. And while Gusto may be Fool Heavy’s freshman effort, its clear that this isn’t the pair’s first rodeo.

The writing is strong, it’s authentic, and it engages over and over. With witty lyrical quips and ethereal hooks, the band’s double vocal dynamic proves to be the driving force behind songs that refuse to be predictable. It’s a powerful record and a promising first-offering from two minds venturing off the deepest ends of mania. If it’s any indication of what Fool Heavy has to offer this world, you’re in for a frenzied and fearless ride.

Review: Grizzly Bear’s "Painted Ruins" Album

painted ruins.jpg

Painted Ruins exemplifies just how difficult it is to push the limits of genre, of style itself, in an age when much of the history of recorded music is readily available to anyone with a smartphone. The album sounds like Pink Floyd-lite—it would have been mediocre in 1968, and it's still mediocre now.

Don't get me wrong, the album is perfectly "listenable," and even, at times is enjoyable, but I seriously doubt many people will still be listening to it in a year.

The catchiest and most fun track, "Mourning Sound," features a thumping bass line and Kevin Parker influenced vocals that exhibits just how much Tame Impala's signature sound has taken over much of popular music. The problem is that Tame Impala is best when it is done by Tame Impala (or sometimes when it's done by Rihanna).

Grizzly Bear.jpg

The most interesting moment on Painted Ruins comes at the beginning of "Glass Hillside," with a Syd Barrett style melody that stands out for a few moments before quickly devolving into a bland track.

The final track, "Sky Took Hold," is the group using atmosphere and dynamics at its finest, but even that track is not likely one I will find myself repeatedly returning to.

Painted Ruins is, ultimately, a wholly forgettable album.

Sleepy Carolina's Review of Lana Del Rey's New Album "Lust For Life"

@LanaDelRey just released her 5th studio album "Lust For Life" (2017), and it is amazing- not that we didn't anticipate that...

Lana Del Rey, or Elizabeth Woolridge Grant, is an American singer- songwriter who is known for her dramatic and Old Hollywood style music. Lana just released her 5th studio album Lust For Life (2017), and it is amazing- not that we didn't anticipate that. The album features artists such as The Weeknd, A$AP Rocky, Stevie Nicks, Sean Ono Lennon and Playboi Carti.

When discussing the beginning stages of the album with NME magazine, Lana stated "I do have early thoughts about what I'd like to do with it. My label, Interscope, is pretty flexible and open to my records coming out at any time, so I don't have that pressure. I'm just happy to be able to keep on making music I can stand behind. That's enough for me." She expressed the desire to take the album in a different direction from her preceding project Honeymoon (2015), while maintaining the same overall aesthetic.

The 16- track album starts off with a song titled "Love", which was a single released in January and the first track the world would hear from Lust For Life. The track is slow, ambient and classic Lana. The backing instrumentation is minimal with a subtle and consistent bass, while Del Rey's vocals take center stage with minimal to no harmonies. The second track "Lust For Life (feat. The Weeknd)" is a nice change of pace and carries underlying tones of indie and dream pop. The Weeknd also shows a brand new side of himself by singing softly over a completely different sound than we are used to hearing from him, and it is a genre that definitely works for his vocal style.

The next few tracks tend to stick along the same vibe until the 6th track titled "Summer Bummer (feat. A$AP Ricky & Playboi Carter)", which displays Lana's voice over a hard- hitting hip hop beat. A$AP comes in about a minute into the song, and the contrast between Del Rey's sweet voice against the rappers more aggressive vocals work really well together. The album continues to carry a hiphop feel until about the 12th tack, "Beautiful people, Beautiful Problems (feat. Stevie Nicks), which drops all the synths and instrumentals and turns indie-folk, bringing the album back to basics. The 13th track "Tomorrow Never Came (feat. Sean Ono Lennon) proves to be one of our personal favorites, and the son of Yoko and John sounds insanely like his father. Both singers have heavy reverb on their vocals, giving the song a live- audience and spaced- out haunting feel, and the harmonies in the chorus are simply breathtaking,

The last two tracks fill out the end of Lust For Life brilliantly until the final song, "Get Free", which was by far the best song to end the project with. The use of minor chords make the listener aware that the album is coming to a close, but also give of a to-be-continued vibe when the chorus takes a 180 and seemingly switches genres completely.

Lust For Life was a very well thought out, precise and beautiful piece of art- and one of Lana's best project to date. The underlying messages behind her tracks are plentiful and open for interpretation, giving each and every listener something different to take out of them. There are so many different styles and genres intertwined throughout all 16 tracks, keeping Lust For Life interesting and perfect for all varieties of listeners.

Review: American Dreamer's "Restless Nights"

Formed in Austin, Texas, this earthly ensemble of alternative pop and orchestrated folk depicts budding life experiences seen and expressed through thriving...

Formed in Austin, Texas, this earthly ensemble of alternative pop and orchestrated folk depicts budding life experiences seen and expressed through thriving musicianship. This universally appealing band consists of: Audrey Lee (Violin), Courtney Castaneda (Cello), Dana Wygsmans (Back-up Vocals, Bass) and Sasha Klare-Ayvazian, the band's vocalist, guitarist, composer, and founder. Besides being the main fuel in American Dreamers, Ayvazian is also a teacher with a Masters degree in music and all that educational dedication to the study of sound influences his engaging singing and songwriting.

The record is filled with rich and charming tracks like the strumming acoustic trances coupling with emotional strings in the warm opener "Open Your Eyes" that speeds up the pace into a lightly lifted atmosphere, the slow ballroom waltz in the melancholy tale of loneliness in "When Your Away", the rock rooting blues inspired "Start-Stopping", and the instrumental quick but strong beauty in, "Lullaby". This eleven track golden gem is also accompanied with the colorful and artistic music video for the single, "All The Time". Restless Nights is the band's debut full-length album. A mature and professionally sweet record.

DCWS's Exclusive Interview With Alternative Rock Singer-Songwriter Megan Landry

On @meganlandryy Soundcloud profile, her bio line states "I am an artist", but after listening to her new single "Screaming Sun"...

On Megan Landry's Soundcloud profile, her bio line states "I am an artist", but after listening to her new single "Screaming Sun", it is clear that she is much more than just that. Based in Ottawa, Megan is pulling double duty as a college student studying multi-media design and is currently working on her next project, which follows her debut album from 2015, "STILLS".

We connected with Megan to find out how she manages being a student and aspiring rock star, how her latest single came together, how she stands apart from her musical influences and much more. After reading our Q&A with Megan, be sure to stream/download "STILLS" below.

I really love the instrumentation of your new single "Screaming Sun"; it's almost like a second voice on the song. Who produced it and how did the track come together?

Thanks for noticing that. I love the details in pulling a piece together. I've been working with the same music engineer, Scott Walsh, for six years now—I was 14 when we did my first recording. It's always been the same pattern with us. I write all the music and lyrics first using my piano, often super late at night, or in the wee hours of the morning, and alone. Though piano is the base, there's always a full blown production in my head. Then I go to the studio to create that accoustic piece into my vision. It starts with recording how I first wrote it, then I direct the editing to build what I'm imagining. 'Screaming Sun' was done this way—piano and rough cut of the vocals, and then building around it. The notes organically progressed into voices during recording, accompanied by a citar. That part was spontaneous and experimental. I like doing that, even surprising myself sometimes.

Voice or instrumentals, I love the way music can tip toe or slam, dance or run. It's on a different realm of reality, yet so connected to us in ours. Even with no words music feels happy/sad, it speaks in a universal language of its own and that's what I love to play with.

Who are some of your musical influences and how do you stand apart from them?

This is always a tough question. I don’t identify with or measure myself to any one particular artist or band. I seriously love all music, all genres. I respect what goes into creating—it’s not easy. Some of my favourite artists include: St. Vincent, Lianne La Havas, Frank Ocean, Muse, Radiohead, Tame Impala, Patrick Watson, OkGo, Nirvana, Beatles, Beyoncé, The Neighbourhood, Skrillex, just to name a few—my genre list is varied too, including classical, some blues and jazz. My taste is all over the place. Maybe this is why I've never felt like I belonged to one genre.

What can you tell us about your second album? Do you have a title for it yet and how will it be different from your first album "STILLS"?

My second album is four songs away from finished, very excited about this release. There's no general theme, just a stream of various thoughts influenced from things going on around me, including politics, world affairs, climate change and personal things too. The biggest difference between the two albums is the pace; my new album is more upbeat. I experiment with large choruses and big drums. From the lyric content to the music, I love to be expressive and individualistic straying from basic chords and topics choosing ones instead that I feel are culturally significant to my generation.

There's no name yet, mulling around a few ideas still. I really want it to be special. As a share though, along with 'Questions [on the Cliff]' and 'Screaming Sun' some of the other titles include 'No politics in Pangea', 1996, Salt, 20 Candles, Paradigm, and Crawl.

To follow up on the last question, what are you most proud of with your debut album "STILLS"?

STILLS was my first album, so the accolades it got took me by surprise, a good surprise. It was released in late August of 2015 and received two Indie album of the year acknowledgements. One was called a Rokky Award from a Canadian magazine Rokline, and the other was from a fairly prominent e-zine called Jammerzine.

And, Jammerzine's, The 25 Best Indie Albums of 2015: Megan Landry – STILLS, I think it's American but I can't find anywhere where it says they are from http://jammerzine.com/the-25-best-indie-albums-of-2015-8/

I don't have a favourite song, they are so different. Some like 'Pieces', 'Cut To It' and 'Fork' are more personal than some of the others like 'Human Leather' or 'Yellow at a Funeral'. I am pleased though that as a debut album it was so well received.

How do you juggle your college life with your musical aspirations?

It's challenging. School has to come first, above all else. I think an education is critical, regardless of your path. I do feel though that education doesn't just come from school. I've learned and done so many things because of music. I'm not rushing towards anything either though. College life has other things about it, like partying and friends that is part of life. Everything will come together as it's meant to be.

Interview: Alternative Rock Artist WRENN

WRENN is an alt-rock artist and a self-proclaimed “sad girl” who uses music as a means of communicating her feelings to the world. Mixing soulful, thoughtful lyrical content with 90’s-esque grunge instrumentation, the essence of WRENN’s music is both reminiscent of the past and a portal into the near future. The 20-year-old Los Angeles native has been featured on American Idol and The Voice, Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve (where she performed with fellow singer Rachel Platten). WRENN is currently on her first nationwide tour – performing as a supporting act for headliner, American rocker and viral music star, Gnash.

We connected with WRENN for this exclusive interview to get some insider information about her latest single 'I'm Tired of Being Alone', find out which artists have influenced her as a musician, as well as what we can expect from her upcoming EP "Without Reason". After reading this Q&A be sure to check out WRENN's upcoming tour dates with Gnash and get your tickets now!

Tell us about your latest single "I'm Tired of Being Alone". Is this song based on a personal experience?

It is and it isn't. My emotions get the best of me most of the time, and tend to overexagerate the intensity of a situation. Someone who was a part of my project left over really superficial reasons, and I honestly just got overwhelmed. Most of the creative process that take place in the “WRENN” project I’ve done pretty much on my own, and it just got to a point where I really wanted to share both the excitement and burden of this with someone else. I wrote the whole song in a night.

Being only 20 years old and going on a nationwide tour with Gnash has got to be an amazing such a gratifying experience. What are you most excited about in regards to the tour?  And what do you hope to learn on the road?

We’re actually right in the middle of it right now. I’m actually writing this from the tour bus while we’re stopped in Nashville, TN. It’s been really gratifying so far, I’ve really never played shows to so many people who know my music. There got to be a point the other night where I stopped singing but the crowd kept going and it really gave me a moment of realizing why I do this. Even more so, I get to go and hang out with my friends after the shows. That's the thing, we’re all really actually friends. I honestly started crying in Dallas watching Gnash because I was just overwhelmed with how proud I am for everyone. I know that a bit all over the place, but hat’s what I hope to keep learning on tour. It’s a sprawling concept that keeps changing.

Every artist has the own story about how they initially became interested in music. What motivated you to become an artist and who has influenced you musically?

Honestly, I don’t really think there was one thing that ever pushed me to do music. I’ve been writing music for as long as I can remember. To me it has always been a normal, everyday part of life. If I were to delve deeper into it I would say it’s always been my way to cope with life. I identify and have been influenced by artist’s that share that same mentality; Keaton Henson, Kurt Cobain, Patty Smith, Courtney Barnett, and Anaiis Mitchell, to name a few.

What can we expect from your upcoming debut EP "Without Reason", due for release in early 2017?

In simplest terms, music that explores emotion that's normally not discussed.

Are you writing and recording songs for the EP while you are on the road?

I actually finished all of the initial songs before I left. I’ve been working on new one since being on the road though and have a feeling I’ll end up on the EP very soon.

Do you have a favorite song to perform live? If so, why?

“I’m Tired Of Being Alone” is definitely my favorite to do live. It’s just me & my drummer who play it and it’s super raw and emotional and there’s so many great parts to it both instrumentally, and vocally.

Five years from now, where do you plan to be with your musical career?

Ahead.

DC Alternative Rock Duo The Slang Releases Their New Video "Night and Day"

The Slang is an alternative/rock band consisting of duo John Bobo and John Newsome.  Their musical talents...

The Slang is an alternative/rock band consisting of duo John Bobo and John Newsome.  Their musical talents have earned them invitations to several premier music conferences including MPMF, NXNE, and CMJ.  In addition, the sounds of The Slang have been used in various mainstream outlets including HBO, USA network, and Troma Films.

The Slang’s path is anything other than typical for a rock band.  Lead Singer John Bobo turned down becoming an FBI Special Agent in order to focus on music and record the bands debut EP.  The success of that record led to more touring and a desire to record another album.  The follow-up EP’s title (Night and Day) refers to a number of differences the band experienced since the debut EP was recorded.  The band went from a three-piece to a duo and decided to change the scenery from the hustle of NYC to the more relaxed atmosphere of Nashville, TN.  In addition, they used a number of well-known Nashville session players to fill out the more layered sound of the new EP.

Here's The Slang's new video, the title track off their recently released EP "Night and Day", available for streaming below.

Review: The Amber Herd's "In Cascade" EP

Contributing writer L.M. Alder reviews The Amber Herd's new EP "In Cascade". The Amber Herd is an Alternative/Post-punk outfit from Nottingham and Chesterfield UK...

The cover art of In Cascade shows a human figure wearing what appears to be a fur-lined coat, head tilted just slightly up, eyes presumably turned toward the striking aquamarine sky full of stars. It's the perfect image for the EP—because the four tracks offered are, at times, just as other-worldly, just as stark, just as oddly gorgeous as this image.

The 25-minute EP starts with “Northern Sky,” a song that begins with a fade-in of ambient noise before vocalist Neil Beards enters with an echo, then a synthesizer (or is that a theremin?) joins, and it becomes clear that The Amber Herd knows how to use noise to create a unique soundscape reminiscent of Spiritualized or, at times, Pink Floyd. They also know how to use their lyrics to tell a story, which is quickly apparent in “Northern Sky.” This first track, at just under four minutes, is perhaps the most radio friendly on the album—The Amber Herd's sometimes psychedelic songs usually do not dip below the five-minute mark. It is also the song with the catchiest vocal melody.

“Hall of Mirrors” takes us further into the realm of psychedelia: Everything about the production is dreamy. The guitars seem to swirl around, the vocals are slightly distant and one has to strain a bit to hear them, but then a lead guitar and a bass line ground us and we find at the heart of the track a well rendered pop song, also well adorned.

If there is a ballad on the album, it is “Thursday,” a gentle, romantic track that could have easily turned cliché, but doesn't. There is enough originality in it to carry a listener through to the final track, “Stage Fright (Payola Disco Remix),” which is a new look at a song from Our Only Eden. This track is perhaps the most indicative of how much The Amber Herd have matured in two years: They took a song that was arguably the strongest on a previous record, made it longer, and made it even more engaging. They manage to fill the song with all kinds of ambient noises without making it feel cluttered—it remains simultaneously sleek and full at the same time, with electronic drums, synth, and more echo on Beards' vocals. At the end, he repeats: “Shutup. Do you dream yourself to sleep/or do you wake up?”

Those lyrics could summarize the whole album. It's made for listening through headphones, just before bed, at those strange times in-between waking and sleep, when everything can seem both clear and hazy at the same time.

In Cascade will be available from Herdwork Records on Friday, July 22.
