You come from the borough that has bred so many Hip-Hop legends including Fat Joe, Big Pun, KRS-One, the list goes on and on. Do you feel that there is a certain expectation for artists such as yourself who comes from such hollowed grounds?
Yes. I feel like coming from the birthplace of Hip-Hop that I have a reputation to live up to. I put a lot of thought into my song concepts and wordplay when writing my music. My music is very commercial but if you listen to the lyrics it is also very lyrical, which people expect from Bronx artists.
What do you enjoy more - rapping or producing? Why?
Honestly, I enjoy producing more. I’ve always preferred the behind the scenes aspect of the business than being in the spotlight. I love writing lyrics but I only started rapping them myself to become more noticed as a brand. Didn’t expect it to take off as much as it has.
Tell us about your entertainment company So Phenomenal Entertainment. What do enjoy most about being an executive and what do you hate the most about all the responsibilities that come with being the boss?
So Phenomenal Entertainment (SPE) was always a dream of mine. I felt like talent was too controlled by the companies they were signed to. My company is more of a partner with each of its signees. We work together hand in hand. The best thing about being an executive is you can do things the way you want to. You don’t have to answer to anyone. The downside is everyone's problems become your problems. It’s a very stressful job but also very rewarding.
Congratulations on the release of your video "Masterpiece", which is a track from your latest EP "Ethos". Why did you select "Masterpiece" for a visual?
Masterpiece has been my biggest hit to date. People were asking about the video for awhile so I felt like I had to give the people what they wanted.
With 2017 winding down, what do you look forward to the most in 2018 musically and as a brand?
I look forward to the release of my “Ethos” album. I released my “Ethos” EP in June 2017 and the response was phenomenal. I can’t wait for people to hear the full length album. Plus, SPE will be releasing new music by Oz, and Ceresee J & Frank Smith. 2018 everyone will know the SPE brand.
