We connected with talented Los Angeles based indie pop artist L E A for an exclusive interview to discuss her newly released single “Kiss and Make Up”, featuring Jasper. We also got a chance to pick L E A’s brain about some of the things that inspire her creativity as an artist, whether we can expect a visual for her single, what some of her goals are musically for 2020, and much more.

After reading our Q&A with L E A, be sure to connect with her on Instagram, and check out some more of her music on Spotify!

What are some things that inspire your creativity as an artist when developing new music?

Things that inspire my creativity… For me, it comes and goes in waves. The only thing I can do to “help my creativity flow” is life. I’m a very reactive, expressive, emotional individual. And luckily I can use those feelings for good by taking it out on my music.

I tend to take a lot general inspiration (fashion, music to listen to) from people. So whether that’s a conversation, moment in time, or eventful situation-ship with somebody, I’d say that fuels my creativity. And colors. Bright, colorful things really help visually paint a picture and brand :)

Congratulations on the release of your new single “Kiss and Make Up”. Tell us about your creative process for this song’s development. Also, how did you connect with Jasper?

Thank you so much! I actually wrote this song in February of 2019. I came home after one night of bar hopping (the usual) and sat at my midi keyboard, turned on ALL my electronics at 3 am, and could not. stop. writing.

I think most musicians and songwriters can understand this— but I have had so many uncompleted songs for years. It takes a lot of brain juice to pound out an entire song start to finish. I knew this song was different and special to me because it was probably the easiest song I’ve ever written. It took months to perfect the lyrics and come up with the instrumentation. I wrote the melody, but worked with Yuval Maayan (who works with talented songwriter Brooke Alexx) to bring “Kiss and Make Up” to life.

Now bringing Jasper into the picture, I’ve known him for about 5 years and we met by being in the same a cappella group in college. If I’m being honest, there wasn’t a better person or voice to be featured on this track. The feeling, energy, emotion, and story revolved around our chemistry for this song and it all fell into place.

To us, your single is calling for a visual; can we expect one for it in early 2020?

I’m so honored to be working alongside very talented artists such as Kendall Brewer (who created the album art) and Esteban Fajardo (who’s creating motion graphics). Expect to see little visuals here and there for this full piece that will launch on YouTube ;)

When someone listens to “Kiss and Make Up” for the first time, what do you want them to take away from the experience?

When you listen to “Kiss and Make Up” for the first time, I want you to feel my 2019. This song may be a ballad that turns into Sam Smith/Normani disco vibes, but underneath it all, it was a dramatic, emotional rollercoaster, and with me, you wouldn’t have it any other way. So feel the drama with this fire sign duet, sing along, and share it if you love it!

Can you tell us what some of your goals are musically this year?

Goals for 2020: Do more live shows. I’m always performing at my local karaoke bar to fill that void, and I’d love to take my performance to another level, more venues. I don’t have an EP coming out, so I’m just focusing on developing ideas further to release more singles (stay tuned for a really cool collab). Oh and collaborations. I absolutely adore people and working with other creatives, I will do more of that this year.
