Toronto Based Rapper Ekelle Unveils Her Latest Single/Video "Dropped"
With the fight for racial equality taking off across the globe Toronto rapper Ekelle lends her vocals and some bars to ‘Dropped’, produced by B. Morales, along with visuals by Jordan Randall. This is the second single from her upcoming EP due late September.
With the Black Lives Matter movement finally taking centre stage, Ekelle decided now is the time to speak on the detriment and trauma that can come from racial profiling in police interactions. Recalling a situation where she was falsely arrested in connection with a drug trafficking scandal while returning from a vacation, Ekelle felt like her whole world was closing in. Although the charges were eventually dropped many dollars, tears and sleepless nights were spent on courtroom proceedings and the stress of trying to keep it all together.
“I’d be absolutely crushed one day and anxious the next. I had been working so hard on my music before all of this happened and didn’t want to lose my momentum so I just kept pushing myself forward. It was hard and probably a little crazy for me, but I couldn’t stand still and think about it, that’s when I’d fall into a depressed state. Moving forward kept my mind off things, gave me something to live for. If I told you I didn’t think of ending it all I’d be lying.
I didn’t wanna tell anyone other than immediate family and friends because of the stigma that comes with an arrest. They say innocent until proven guilty, but we all know that isn’t true, especially when you’re Black.” -
