Los Angeles-Based Art Collective Beach Bums Release Their New Video "Irememberyou"
The Los Angeles-based art collective Beach Bums is comprised of rapper/drummer/producer Keanu Harvin (aka Kunu), synth/keys player Joe Contreras, and bassist Elijah G. Alamo. This core ensemble has spent the last few years releasing a slew of genre-spanning records that range from hardcore punk to lo-fi hip-hop, garage rock to trap, and surf rock to metal. 2017’s aptly named Everything brought all of these influences together, while the group’s 2018 follow-ups I Want to Sleep Forever and The Goat (Pts. 1 & 2) showed a more measured approach, instead focusing solely on indie rock and hip-hop, respectively. These records, paired with the group’s reputation for their wild live shows, led to shared bills with acts like King Krule, The Drums, Jhené Aiko, Kali Uchis, Chicano Batman & more, and resulted in OC Weekly dubbing Beach Bums, “The Wu-Tang of Los Angeles punk.”
Beach Bums’ newest releases, The Goat EPs, are a series of hip-hop focused records that showcase Kunu and Jawntang's vocal prowess and production talents, blending booming trap songs that match the energy of the group’s punk releases with hazy cloud rap that conjures images of late night drives down Sunset Boulevard in a hotboxed sedan.
Beach Bums' single "Irememberyou" kicks off The Goat Pt. 2 with its hazy blend of lo-fi hip-hop production and vocalist Jonathan Horsley (aka Jawntang)'s melodic, effect-washed vocals. The group's primary rapper Kunu's raspy flow drives the second verse, showcasing the group's ability to seamlessly blend disparate influences into a cohesive sound. The accompanying video, directed by Beach Bums visual art affiliate Herbert Guevara, follows Beach Bums members around scenic Los Angeles splicing in footage of their frenetic, genre-spanning live performances.
