Dua Lipa Shares the Music Video For Her New Single "Physical"
Dua Lipa manages to make pop music that isn’t saccharine or irritating. This is a difficult feat to accomplish, esecpially because of the manufactured drivel that the pop genre can sometimes be fraught with. On her sophomore album, Lipa reminds us that pop is a wide-spanning realm, and maybe that’s due to her influences, who go all the way from Blondie to Outkast, both of whom inspired her on her current album, which is set to release April 3rd.
Robust synths teleport us back to a time when Olivia Newton John was the biggest radio hit. Borrowing from the famous ‘80s singer, Lipa forges her own way in a futuristic meets Back to the Future vibe that we can’t get out of our head. Also, we can’t get enough of her well- implemented hand claps, which we will most definitely be embarrassing ourselves when we hear “Physical” in public.
The track’s melody change is something that we don’t hear often in a chart-topper, and adds dynamic personality to what could have been a boring song. Sleek vocals glide against a throbbing background for a new take on electro-pop that artists like The Weeknd have previously explored.
Even the pop-jaded will find it hard not to start dancing when this catchy anthem comes on. The melody is surprisingly beefy combined with her smoky vocals. Even though it’s a dance track, “Physical” has an unspoken theme of empowerment that comes to mind, mostly because of its similarity to female ‘80s icons such as Pat Benatar.
This is a vintage-inspired song that makes us even more curious about this enigma’s upcoming releases. What we love most about Dua Lipa and her latest release is that it’s hard to put it in any mainstream box. She’s forging her own way on the pop landscape, and we can’t wait for the album to drop in April.
