DOPEST Video of the Week: "I Can't Stop Thinking About You" by JËVA
Our DOPEST Video of the Week comes from emerging Australian-Chinese Queer pop artist JËVA who has released a new innocent love song and clip for “I Can’t Stop Thinking About You,” which shines a light on when he came to terms with his sexuality and used love as a vehicle of escapism.
Growing up obsessed with romance, coupled with being brought up with Asian traditional values, it wasn’t long until JËVA found out he wasn’t able to fulfill his parents dreams of settling down, finding a wife and having children.
“In order to fulfil my mum’s dream, I firstly needed to find a wife, which means I would need to fall in love. Love. I think I loved this boy in my grade?... and that’s what I became obsessed with,”
“I became a hopeless romantic and spent all my time and energy into falling for someone, thinking about him endlessly and repeating all the different scenarios of what could be.
That’s what the song is about; escapism. I was escaping into the innocence of romance to avoid facing the truth of my sexuality”
Like many children of immigrants, growing up as a minority in Western Culture was already a challenge for JËVA to identity himself. He spoke the same language, played the same games, shared the same interests but he looked different, and sometimes in life.
JËVA says, “That’s all that matters,” Coupled with coming to terms with his sexuality, it all unfolded for him to become the artist he is today.
The single is off his coming of age 3-track EP “Saturday” due to drop in October. The EP is the first chapter of JËVA’s story, filled with pop, sweet acoustic melodies mixed in with some smooth RnB paying homage to his roots. The EP is a collection of tracks before coming out, before realizing his worth as an artist and a person.
Magic takes many forms, in this case of JËVA, a 23-year-old Queer person of colour hailing from Sydney whose determined to make his mark in the music industry and represent Queer people of colour. JËVA sounds like Troye Sivan, Maggie Rogers and a KPop girl group. An independent artist, songwriter and an upcoming unapologetic pop prince, his artistry is colourful and unique. His upcoming EP marks the beginning of a beautiful journey for the artist.
