Griffin Bars' New Single “King of My City” is a Hit With a Way Deeper Meaning
Griffin Bars’ new song entitled “King of My City” features an energetic and bouncy production as well as upbeat but fierce melodic vocals. The lyrics throughout the song paint an abstract picture of a small town rapper trying to make it in the music business, alone and by any means necessary.
The city he’s referring to is DeKalb, Illinois. About an hour west of Chicago. The city of DeKalb has roughly 43,000 people, a Facebook data center and Northern Illinois University. It also hosts above average crime and poverty rates. So if Griffin Bars is indeed the king of DeKalb, he’s not doing a great job.
Prior to this release Griffin Bars posted a video to his Instagram story saying, “Calling myself the King Of My City is completely ironic and that title means absolutely nothing to me. I was born in Canada. Yeah I spent a lot of my youth in that area, but a lot of people in that city don’t think too highly of my endeavors in music and that’s the point. I have a lot of fans in many cities who are going to be singing along saying that I’m the king of my city.”
Furthermore, Griffin Bars has not resided in the DeKalb area for years and was even banned from a local venue in 2017 before going on a national tour the following year. On his song “MTV”, he rapped on the hook about wanting to escape “this city”. So it’s clear Griffin Bars has a strong disliking for the area. The songs outro is dope and was recorded live. It features a sample of Griffin yelling “Griff”, while a crowd of people respond with “Got Bars” However, that event wasn’t even in Illinois. Nope, it was in Santa Fe, NM. Which is over 1,200 miles away from DeKalb.
“King of My City” was produced by Nathan Speiser and engineered by AJ Blitz at ItXital Studios. The track will appear on Griffin’s debut project “Lamborghini Day Dreams” which is expected to drop before the fall of 2022.
