We connected with THAi to find out how she balances being a high school student with her aspirations as an artist, what sparked her interest in singing and songwriting and much more.
What sparked your interest in singing and songwriting?
Well, I can remember when I was around 6 or 7 years old, I loved to watch Hannah Montana on Disney channel. I enjoyed the singing and the music from that show and the secret life that she led as a famous pop star. That's when I began singing and my mom took notice and she was so excited to learn that I had potential. From there on my mom put me in the children's choir at our church and it's been a singing journey ever since. So I would have to say that Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana started me to singing. I enjoy it and I also enjoy writing! I love music and being a musician! It's just amazing!
Who are some of your musical influences and if you could only choose one of them to do a collaborative track with, who would it be?
Some of my musical influences are Justin Bieber, The Beatles, The Jackson 5, Ariana Grande, Beyoncé, Miley Cyrus, Chris Brown, Christina Perri, & Jhene Aiko. If I could only choose one to do a collaborative track with, that's a no brainer. I would definitely choose Justin Bieber. It's been one of my dreams and destiny to one day record a song with him. I think he's an awesome musician and entertainer and very gifted person.
Tell us about your skills on the flute. Do you plan on incorporating that instrument on an EP or album at some point?
Well, I have been playing the flute for about 5 or 6 years now. I absolutely love it and I enjoy it. I'm great at it but it's not a passion for me. My dad has asked me a few times if I would try to incorporate my flute skills on one of my original songs. I think it's a possibility that I might do that at some point or another as I progress in my music career. We'll see.
How do you balance your goals as an artist with your commitment as a high school student?
It's very hard at times to balance my commitment as a high school student with my commitment and love for music. I'm a member of the choir, the marching band, and the step team at my school. Sometimes I feel like I'm being pulled into numerous directions. I can get a little cranky at times and tough to deal with because of my demanding schedule. But I have a very supportive team, friends, and family. They look out for me which makes it easy to deal with my schedule. So yeah, you gotta have a support system to help you cope. It's very important.
Would you say that your music is influenced at all by your surroundings in Houston?
No I wouldn't say that my music is influenced by my Houston surroundings. Instead, it's influenced by some of my favorite artists and musicians. I incorporate that with my own style and because I like so many different genres of music, you never know what you're going to get out of me. Although I am an R&B kind of girl, I'm also a country kind of girl, and I sometimes can be a punk rock kind of girl. So you just never know what you're going to get.
What's next for you musically and what are your goals for the rest of 2016?
Well, what's next for me musically is, more singing, more song writing, more studio time, & trying to get my music heard all over the world. Right now I'm focused on preparing for the East Texas Music Awards in Bullard Texas. I have been nominated for R&B artist of the year and I will also be performing two of my original songs on the night of the ceremony. I'm going up against Letoya Luckett and some other R&B artists as well. So I have my work cut out for me. I am definitely in this industry for the long haul. It is my passion. It's my dream and it is my destiny! With that being said, music is what I will be doing for the rest of 2016.
Thank you for interviewing me and for this wonderful opportunity!
