Where does your name 201 originate from and what does it mean?
My name "201" comes from life. Life is a 201 when you really break it down. You start off in life thinking your twice as good as anyone else (2). Then, you get to a point where you feel like your worthless and have no value due to the various trials and tribulations that life throws at you (0). Then ultimately, you discover a path that leads you to being number one (1). Put that all together and you have "201".
Who are some of the RnB artists that you can point to and say that they have influenced your music?
My music is influenced by many artists, present and past. When it comes to RnB, a couple of my influences include Musiq Soulchild, Jodeci, Mint Condition, and Dru Hill just to name a few. Some current artists I like are Tory Lanez, with the Chixtape series, PartyNextDoor, and Brent Faiyaz.
Major salute to you on the completion and release of your EP "201". Describe your creative process for the development of the EP's songs.
The creative process of my debut EP occurred over the span of 2 years. During this time, I was in the midst of trying to find my sound while also aiming to put out a high quality project. This project is a refection of my life and the various things that have unfolded to make me the man that I am today. Some of the tracks are more serious while others are more fun. Songs like “Bmore” and “One Night” reflect a softer, smoother side of my life while songs like “On Yak” and “Too Faded”, “So Loaded” (Spacetime) show my exciting, lively side.
I always aim to have a good balance with my music so that my audience has different songs they can gravitate to. This EP is only beginning of the 201 sound and I will continue putting out more RnB heat for the world to listen to.
Can we expect any videos to be released from the new EP? If so, which one(s)?
I am still debating on creating videos for this project. My main goal is to put out another single before the end of the year and continue putting out content all 2020. With that being said though, I may change my direction and think about videos but that isn't my current mindset at the moment.
With 2019 winding down, what are some of your goals musically for 2020?
I plan on coming out with a couple more singles early next year along with another EP. I also have another project outside of music that I’m working on as well which I'll be announcing very soon. 201 season is in full effect all 2020.
