Congratulations on your new single "Bloom". We're glad you decided to start back creating music because it's a great song. Why did you stop and what specifically motivated you to start back?
First off thank you for listening to my song and featuring me. I stopped pursuing a music career, because I had such low confidence. When writing music, I found myself trying to portray someone I wasn’t. I wanted my music to be authentic to my experiences, and as a artist I didn’t feel ready to release anything. So I decided to take a break to find myself and grow as a person.
During this time I was attending college/graduated, and enlisting in the Army National Guard. While in basic training for the Army, I would sing in the Female Bay at night. Singing all those nights, bought back my dream to pursue music.
You've mentioned that your second single "Circles" is coming soon. What can you tell us about that song and will there be a video for "Bloom" or this upcoming single?
My upcoming single “Circles” is about how I let my anxieties get in the way with guy I almost dated. I’ve been shy my whole life, so I always have a hard time opening up. Instead of being myself, I acted more reserve and timid. I thought a possible relationship would help me open up more. There will be a music video release for “Circles”.
I think your power suit look is very distinctive; tell us more about your style and how it intersects with your music.
I am very inspired by how my mom dressed in her early 20’s. My mom moved from the Philippines to NYC when she was 17 in the late 1970s. She came from nothing and made herself a life in the city. Power suits remind me of how my mom made a living for herself, as an independent woman. I want to feature a power suit in my upcoming music video for “Circles”, to express my independence as a woman in society today.
With 2018 coming to a close, what are some of your musical goals for 2019?
In 2019, I plan to release my first album and my second single “Circles”. I don’t have a set idea yet for what I want my album to be like. But I have a few songs currently I am working on. I want to be able to produce one of my songs myself.
Finish this sentence - "When someone listens to a Jae Sole song, I want them to ..."
Be able to relate to my experiences and find peace with the past. Everything happens for a reason in life. We are all on our own little journey of life.
What would you say that attending college for fashion design and going through National Guard basic training taught you about yourself as an artist?
College taught me who I didn’t want to be. I was in a new design program at UCCC, and unfortunately there was a few people that were two faced. For the first semester, I had no friends and felt very left out from the program. I barely spoke because when I did, people often ignored me. I also was in a relationship at the time, and we lacked common interest. I was trying so hard to fit in, that I lost myself in the process.
The Army taught me who I wanted to be. Boot Camp is one of my greatest accomplishments, because it was mentally challenging. It changed how I viewed the world and how I viewed myself. The six months I was away in training, boosted my confidence and helped me become a better person. I stopped thinking so negative about pursuing music, and decided to chase after my dreams.
Both experiences helped mold me into the person I am today, and I am thankful. Without both experiences I wouldn’t have been able to write either of my singles.
