Interview: Queensland Pop Starlet MARLOE. Discusses Her New Single "The Day I Knew I Need You" and Self Titled EP

MARLOE. is a Queensland based pop singer-songwriter who recently released the single “The Day I Knew I Needed You”, which is the first song you’ll hear on her self-titled EP “Marloe.” We featured MARLOE.’s single on DCWS earlier this month, and it is only right that we follow that up with an exclusive interview to find out more about the inspiration behind the song, whether we can expect an upcoming video, her musical goals for the remainder of 2019, and much more.

After reading our Q&A with MARLOE., be sure to stream and share the “Marloe.” EP and connect with the songstress through her website and social media.

Congratulations on the release of your new single "The Day I Knew I Needed You" and the EP it is featured on, "Marloe.". What are you most proud of with the EP overall?

Thank you so much! It has been such a rewarding experience hearing everyone’s feedback on the EP! I think what I’m most proud about with this EP would be allowing myself to open up and share these parts of myself with everyone. It’s not an easy thing to write about all the influential moments that have shaped who I am today. So to be able to let go and share them with the world, was a super powerful and freeing moment for me.

What initially inspired you to write "The Day I Knew I Needed You"? Is it based on a personal experience?

Yes, it is! All of my songs have been inspired by these "lightbulb moments" throughout life. “The Day I Knew I Needed You” was written about someone who came into my life at a very unexpected time. They broke down all of my walls and taught me to be vulnerable. So the song is essentially about the day I realized I needed them to come into my life to help me see the world and myself in a completely different light.

Can we expect a video for "The Day I Knew I Needed You" to drop next? If not, is there a second single pending?

I certainly hope so! It’s definitely on my bucket list for this year to create a music video for one of my songs. Yes, there is a second single pending, one that I am so incredibly excited about. So stay tuned!

Tell us about the time you spent in NYC in the Musical Theatre program at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy. What would you say is the most important thing you learned there that has been applicable to your music career?

The time I spent in New York studying at AMDA was definitely some of the best years of my life to date. That experience played such a huge role in shaping who I am and mapping out my direction with MARLOE. It was such an intense and rigorous program that I sometimes look back and think, “how on earth did I make it through that?!”. I think the biggest thing I learnt at AMDA was dedication to your craft, and that no one is going to do it for you, so if you want it, you better work hard to make it happen.

Being that you have lived in the United States, specifically New York City, how would you compare it to Australia when it comes to the appreciation of new music by emerging artists?

That’s a really interesting one. To be honest I don’t know too much about the industry in New York, but from my experience I found it was a great place to get out there and perform live as there are so many amazing venues always looking to showcase new talent. One main difference I have noticed is that as an unsigned artist in Australia you still have so many incredible opportunities at your feet to get your music out into the industry. One of our biggest radio stations in Australia “Triple J” have a great platform for unsigned artists. You can upload your music to a database accessible by all of the staff and radio hosts of Triple J to discover, which has helped many emerging artists break into the industry.

What are some of your goals musically for the remainder of 2019?

My main goal would be to release more music. There are so many things I’m excited about and have been working on and I can’t wait to share them with the world. I think 2019 is going to be my best year yet!
